What would be your ideal modification to your defer?

Chook - An article in Land Rover International this month covered the 3.2 duratorque conversion. It's done by Bell Auto and Icon in the UK. Article quoted GBP24,000 drive in drive out for the Bell conversion. You can buy the wiring kit from Bell and do your own conversation. If memory serves me well the wiring kit is GBP1200 ish. For your Puma you need to rebuild the gearbox with the internals from the MT85 (3.2 compatible box).

In last month's edition of the same mag a crazy Spaniard converted a defender with all Toyota running gear, 1 HZ turbo engine (i think or the later factory turbo), toy gearbox, TC, diffs F&R. Custom drive shafts. Only thing left of the defer was the chassis, shell and dash. He ditched the seats (naturally). Got to be said it would make a formidable combination. Owes him EUR100,000 with all the extras he put on it and factoring in 12 months of labour and R&D.

As for Force 9 axles - how much grunt you planning on producing?

You may want to reconsider blocking up the batery box vent holes as they are there for a reason. If a bettery is overcharged, it produces Hydrogen gas on one side and oxygen on the other (due to hydrolysis of water in the cells)... the little gas that is produced is usually vented into the atmosphere and no harm is done.

If however the battery compartment is sealed, it is possible for the gas concentration to increase to a level where it may become explosive. The chances of an exploding battery / battery box are low, but the consequences of a battery acid splash (never mind the explosion) are not pretty.

A better solution would be to seal the underside of the battery box cover so that seal is airtight to the cabin, and leting the box vent as designed. Just a thought.

EDIT: If you meant sealing the lid of the battery box, please ignore my post!

Yes your Wright I didn't think about the potential Hindenburg scenario, Il need to come up with another solution , maybe move the battery outside under the passenger floor in a new box , this way I can have some storage and a duel battery set up that’s easy to access.

Or just replace your battery/s with AGM fully sealed units.

Yes Drover it was pathetic! I have worn out my remote buttons trying to lock, and unlock my Defender before the mod. Even though the alarm unit is on the drivers side, the best location to use my remote was just outside the passenger window. My wife still reminds me how I used to have to wave my arm around pushing the button to lock, or unlock the car, usually combined with moderate foul language.:D

Actually I misread the thread. What I would like as a modification to my Defender would be drop the 3l turbo diesel and auto transmission from my wife's BMW X5 into it. :twisted:
