Mate you have a point there, they do all get hot. But I figure I could leave the kids locked up in a white one for probably another good 10 minutes before emergency services would have to be called, thats about 3 extra schooners :eek:

Nah seriously yes the black absorbs a hell of a lot more heat, and takes so much longer to cool down inside after the air is put on, and although they are all hot locked up I have never felt heat from a white like I have from the black car when opening and getting in, I cant think those extra degrees would do the interior any benefit.

Also the white body panels seem to cool whilst driving as well. But the black just stays hot. Its really a no brainer, but the Black just suits a defender so well its just tempting to get it in black and live with it. But I have 5 others to think about, I'm sure the kids will be more comfortable while im downing the extra schooners :eek:

Don't really drink :angel:, just my warped sense of humour, and half of my kids are old enough to open the doors and get out, just thought I'd add that incase there was some prim & proper politically correct so and so reading on here, but I would not expect that from a Land Rover owner anyway :wasntme:

Personally i think gloss black is a terrible colour for a utilitarian car which is going to get knocked about and scratched. Here in WA i would only consider white or silver, for the heat reflectivity... but then it is basically a desert in summer :cool:

Many older cars (with no a/c) had white roofs for that reason.

I bought white.

I have a black one with a sunroof and yes it’s a pain in summer, that’s the way mine came.
Winter it’s absolutely fine even in Perth.
I would seriously consider white and tint your windows.
But at the end of the day it’s your money and you have to like the vehicle.
PS. Fitting Dynamat as suggested earlier, is defiantly not a waste of time or money. ;)

Up to you what you get, but I am always bemused by those who consider looks more important than practicality - especially in what is a utility vehicle, that you presumably are buying because of its practicality.

In the climate of most of Australia, in my view, any colour except white or near white, at least for the roof, is just plain silly. (But if it is a good buy, don't let the colour put you off - hence mine is blue - with a white roof)

My point is that colour is not the only thing that affects the temperature. There is no point in comparing vehicles with a huge sloping windscreen with a Defender.

Most of the research seems to suggest that the biggest difference between black and white cars is the speed at which they heat up. So if you leave them out in the sun all day, the difference will be negligible, but if you leave them in the sun while you pick up a few items at your local supermarket, the difference will be significant. That seems to be the finding of the research published on the internet.

I believe that the difference between a black Defender and a white Defender would be greater than the differences between a black and a white Prado, Civic, Freelander or any modern conventional shaped sedan. The percentage of temperature rise resulting from sunshine through the glass would be lower than with a sedan. Some of the research mentioned big differences in the temperature of the painted surface. Since a Defender has a higher metal to glass ratio than most vehicles, it would seem reasonable to expect that the temperature difference of the painted surfaces would have a greater impact on the interior temperature.

At the end of the day, a white Defender might be almost as hot as a black one, but the research suggests that the black one will reach that temperature sooner.

I wouldn't consider any other colour except white not only for coolness but it doesn't show the scratches any where near as much as the dark clours do. And after seeing the trouble my elder Bro got into when he scratched his wifes brand new BLACK Vogue I'm certainly not game to try anything else. :D

Update, since owning the white.

Heaps cooler and, since tinting the windows amazing difference. We have now had a few hot days in Syd and I gotta say I have not noticed the heat getting in after being locked up.

Just bought white 110 with tint and often dont need aircon on at all on... noticeably cooler than other darker cars we've owned

My 2008 Puma is black.
The heat is not an issue.
Black shows the scratches.....I am not worried, but I know it would worry some.
