UK import of Defender TCdi questions

    Hi,

I've been lurking on this forum for several years now.
Its been interesting reading all the posts on people agonising over whether to get a TDci engined vehicle or not and what the issues with the newer vehicles are.
I've got a 200 Tdi 110 station wagon that is now 20 years old with 286000km on the clock so I too am looking to upgrade. The problem here in NZ that new 110 defender station wagons only come in the SE model with all the things you don't need like
carpets, electric windows, air con, mag wheels, flash seats and running boards.
The Australian spec looks from what I can see to be far more sensible.
So I am looking to import a vehicle from the UK.
Here are a couple questions for the collective wisdom to ponder.

Some of the vehicles in the UK don't have ABS - how easy is it to tell if a vehicle has ABS? (and don't tell me to check to see if it has a Traction Control Button?!?) Can you easily see the ABS unit in the engine bay?

I am looking at a 2009 vehicle with 0 kms on the clock. Its been sitting in a warehouse as part of a large cancelled order.
Can anyone see any potential problems with a new engine sitting doing nothing for the first 3 years of its life?.

Can you change the odometer readout from miles to km? Is it a engine computer setting?

Can some one please let me know what the 8th digit of the chassis number is for the 2.4 engine and the 2.2 engine?.
The vehicle that I am looking at has a T for the 8th digit and I read some where that this could indicate that the engine is possibly not EURO IV compliant. All vehicles imported to NZ must be EURO IV compliant.

    Thanks

Do you have the same restrictions as here only pre 1989 cars?

    8th Letter

The eighth letter in the VIN will be one of the following.
     P-2.2 EURO SPEC EU5
    R-2.2 ROW SPEC NON EU5
    S-2.4 EURO SPEC EU4
    T 2.4 ROW SPEC NON EU4
    N-2.4 24V MILITARY EURO SPEC EU4
    W-2.4 24V MILITARY ROW SPEC NON EU4

I hope this helps. If you want me to send you the manual that explains the VIN PM me.

    Thanks for the prompt replies

Juddy : I think the import restrictions here aren't based on year. Its more to do with the emissions standards.
200 tdi and 300 tdi are out.
I think the TD5 passes and the 2.4 and 2.2 TCdi pass
    (if they have the
correct letter for the 8th digit in the chassis number.

Carl : thanks for the list of 8th digit possibilities.
The vehicle that I am looking at does have the T (Non Euro IV) so it can't be imported into NZ

so I will have to keep looking. Can you please send me that VIN manual that you mention (km8j1s@gmail.com)

    Thanks

I have tried sending it by email but I am not sure it sent. It is 70mb. If you search the forum for Defender workshop manual you will fund the link and be able to download it. That's how I found it.

    Hey, Kerry.

    Hope things are well.

I found this post and saw you trying this is a few years back and I’m trying this again in Aus.

I’m trying to work out what the differences are between the Defenders sold in Aus and UK in terms of specs and compliance related things.

Could you do me a massive favour and maybe share me your PUMA vin with me? I just want to use VIN Decoder (or similar website) and see what the diffidence is between the UK models and AUS models. Thats the only way I’ll know if I can get a UK one here. I wouldn’t ask but the local LR HQ asked me to tell them what exact car I’m getting and idk yet because I can’t work out what the difference is and thus can’t tell if the one’s I’m looking at in the UK are compliant.

I’d really really appreciate it if you could help.

    Hi Abs,

That was a while ago (2012) when I posted.
    I have a NZ new 2012 110 station wagon.
The Chassis number is SALLDHMRC7A followed by 6 number for the build sequence.

The main thing is the 8th digit of the chassis number

The first 7 digits for a Land Rover 110 station wagon is SALLDHM (even my 1992 tdi had this for the first 7 digits)

This is how the 8th letter is decoded for puma engines (from previous post with some annotation from me).

    P - 2.2 EURO SPEC EU5
    R - 2.2 ROW SPEC NON EU5 (Meaning EU4 meaning no DPF).
    S - 2.4 EURO SPEC EU4
T 2.4 ROW SPEC NON EU4 (Meaning EU2). (These can't be imported into NZ and probably not Australia)
    N - 2.4 24V MILITARY EURO SPEC EU4
    W - 2.4 24V MILITARY ROW SPEC NON EU4

I have seen some Pumas imported into NZ from UK, Australia and South Africa.
The Pumas imported from UK are pretty obvious with Speedo and Odo in Miles.
The 2.2s from the UK have P for the 8th letter of the chassis number meaning EURO 5 compliant meaning they have DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).
I have read quite tales of DPF problems when the engines are used for predominantly short runs and the need more regular oil changes.
Generally 2.2 Pumas from NZ, Australia and South Africa have R as the 8th letter indicating EURO 4 with no DPF.
Also the engine oil required for 2.2 engines with DPF (P) is different for 2.2 engines with no DPF (R).

9th letter of the chassis number
    C = 2012 Model Year

10th letter of the chassis number
7 = Right Hand Steering, Manual Gearbox

11th letter of the chassis number
    A = Solihull Assembled

In 2012 I was looking at the possibility of bringing in a brand new low spec puma into NZ at a reasonable cost saving.
The biggest issue turned out to be the warranty.
Any warranty work would be done by the NZ dealer and charged to me but then it would be up to me
to claim the warranty cost from the UK selling dealer.
In the end I found this warranty issue to be too bigger risk that I wasn't prepared to take so when an Auckland dealer dropped the price of a Defender that had been on the lot for 5 months by 10% I went straight in and bought it.
I've fixed all the things that go wrong with the 2.2 - ashcroft centre diff, ashcroft transfer shaft, ashcroft rear axles and flanges, ashcroft front flanges, silicone turbo hoses.
When you import a vehicle from overseas you are going to run into hurdles. I gather that bringing vehicles in to Australia has more hurdles than NZ.
My advice is to buy something locally and avoid these hassles.
    I did contact Nene Overland
Vehicles for Sale - Land Rover, Jeep, Toyota and 4x4Nene Overland Land Rover Specialist with over 28 years experience
back in 2012 and they were quite helpful but now it looks like that the only do special vehicles.
