    Mick,

when I am given it for free yes. Very clean burning and no smoke.
don't forget the oil otherwise it becomes expensive.

An update to my terrible fuel consumption.

Took the advise on here and adjusted my driving style, I dont push it as hard. I noticed putting my foot down in a lower gear going up hill does not actually make me go any faster, rather go up a gear keep the revs lower and let the torque take over.

This trip mentioned below I averaged 11.8L p/100klm

I just got back from a trip up to Gold Coast, took the New England rather than the coast road, Syd - Armidale - Gold Coast return Gold Coast - Coffs - Syd via New England HWY. Keep it to yourselves but it was the best drive I have ever done to QLD, no speed cameras every 5Klm, no camera cars between the speed cameras and only seen one cop patrol car way up and one HWY Patrol way back. However the Pacific HWY was full off them, from Graften into Goald coast I gave up counting and Goald coast to Coffs counted 6 and two camera cars.

Bit off topic but this is my

Did Gold Coast two years ago, coast rd and swore I would never drive the Pacific HWY ever again, it was like driving Pitt st peak hr the whole way up, there are that many speed traps and the speed limit changes an absolute ridiculous amount of times that you never know what speed zone your in that people were driving over cautious and doing 20klm under the speed limits. And you think we live in a free country Baaaah haaaa haaaa we are all fools.

I have retained our Td5 90 after selling much of my gear including my much loved S.V.X. What I have found, as the wife uses it as her daily drive (for the W.A. government) is that it uses a lot less fuel than the Puma in all situations. Around town, in peak hour crap it is 2-3 litres per 100 km better (by G.P.S.). On a run at 90-100kmph 5-6 ltrs per 100km better loaded with a similar load and tyre fitted. After xmas I am going to get the 90 flashed and will be very interested in any changes this will make. The best I ever got from a tank on the Puma 110 loaded was 520km, I would be very interested to know if the current owner has managed better economy.

Get 11-12 L/100 around town. 13-14 towing. Worst was @15.5L/100 up Stuart hwy to Coober Pedy but roof rack loaded. Driving style is definitely a key fuel economy factor. Also "coasting" with clutch depressed helps into lights/downhill, etc as your revs drop to idle- add all those small intervals of time and will make a difference over a few months!

Are you sure that is a good idea?

Are you sure it makes a difference with a diesel?

I'm with VNX on this, I think on overrun there isn't any fuel going to the engine as the governor doesn't see any need to stop the engine from stalling-I can pull the stop solenoid on mine and it makes no audible difference and can't feel any difference. If you take it out of gear it has to feed fuel in for the idle, so you're probably using a negligent amount more fuel by engaging angel gear.
But my 110 isn't computer controlled.
Of course someone with actual knowledge about diesels will step in and prove me wrong

    Ian, Defender 130

I have just dragged the family from Bright to the Mornington Peninsula via Dargo and some wrong turns. With the camper, roof rack, 80 ltrs of water and humans x 4 we weigh about 2.9 to 3.0 tonne (I have put it over the scales so I'm very sure of this). The fuel consumption was 9.2 L/100 klm. I sit on around 95 Km/h as you realy dont want to put 3 tonne of Defender into a hairpin at 100 plus or 95 Km/h for that matter. I have made two modifications one is a Chip from Fred, the other 190,000 klms as they do get better with age and with age we reduce our speed as we no longer need to proove a thing. Specs. 130 tray, slide on camper, 2000 TD5.

Ps some idiot put 27 ltrs of unleded in it at Bright maybe thats the secret to good econmy? (RACV to the rescue no damage as I had'nt started the motor). Never ask me a question about my defender at the fuel pump please.

I stand to be corrected by all means! But based on engine revs logically wouldn't I be using less fuel at 1000rpm than 2200?

I dont get delivery of my 110 till after xmas,,looking at the average consumption here not really over the top in my mind. At the moment Im skipping around town in a 1.3lt 25 year old zook sierra and some of those numbers are better than what Im getting..But I probably will have to change my driving style with the 110 by the looks of it, I dont touch the gear stick on the seirra till about 4000 revs..

    isuzutoo-eh was pretty right
The governor controls the duel rate to a diesel, and in our vehicles when we lift our right foot we are instructing the governor to reduce the engine speed. If the engine is doing 2200 on overun downhill the governor will reduce the fuel delivery rate to zero if the rpm is above where it wants them to be.

At idle the fuel delivery rate is somewhat higher.
