There are basically only 2 issues with replacing one with another original shift:
- I suppose that eventually even a replacement original shift will crack up too(?).
- How expensive they are new.

Getting a secondhand one at least solves the latter issue.

Dazzler (thanks again, mate!) showed me that changing the whole stick really is a 5 min job. No tools. Just some grease needed.

Compare that to the effort to hack the stick and fit something else....

Hmm, just got back from an outback trip during which I noticed my gearshift knob beginning to crack. Get home and log on here and find it near the top of the page! May have to fire the casting furnace up for a solution:)

I know the post is 5 years old - thanks aulro for keeping old posts - would love to know where I can get a new one to replace mine for less than 2 tanks of diesel !

It must be the heat that does the damage. I see your post and the initiator of the original thread are both Territorians.

Mine just cracked and is ready to peel away. Its a 2010 model so I guess that is not bad. now I need to find a replacement top or full lever also.

Actually the factory gear knob was in good condition when I changed it...
I was just a bit bored

You can easily take off the gearstick by undoing the bottom clips.(two of them)

Then just cut the top gear knob off. The factory gear knob has a hard plastic core...It's in the shape of a testicle. And I just cut it on half's with an angle grinder....
