The way I see it the second hand car market in Australia is a rip-off!:mad: You can pick up Defenders in the UK a dime a dozen, ok they'll be a bit more rusty with the salt they put on the roads in winter but seriously! $15000 for a mid nineties defender! And its not just Landies its everything.
I looked at importing a purchase from the UK and with the shipping cost it was still several thousand dollars cheaper than buying one here but the problem is all the tax you have to pay for it when it gets here leaves it at about the same as buying one here.
I reckon you could buy the parts brand new piece by piece from the UK and build it yourself and it would be cheaper! lol
From about 1984 till the present models of Landie / Defender has just been a slow evolution, no MAJOR changes. The older they are the more agricultural, slow and noisy they are. The newer they are the less rugged and field repairable. Just a matter of choosing the attributes you prefer.
Both my defenders were bought new because of the very strong second hand value,it won't matter which one you buy you'll never loose out,I'd buy new or ex demo if you can find one. Pat
I just bought a 1995 130 with 284k on the clock, bull bar and maxi drive rear locker. Flew to Canberra to pick it up and drove it 8 hours home. Been looking for two years. Bought this one within 3 days of it being listed on Gumtree to make sure I didn't miss out again. Paid 15k for it. Body is rough but it runs well and doesn't leak oil for now.
Sold my 110 300tdi for 5k. Needed a new clutch. Otherwise in great nick. ARB bar and racks, <200k, still see it getting around Newie as it has my custom plates on it. I now realise I offloaded it a bit cheap... I have a TD5 that may become superfluous when the new D4 arrives in a week or two. :D
I bought a stock 2005 110 Td5 for 27k with 78000km on it. Was in immaculate condition, with one careful owner. Not a spec of dust in it. I was looking for a 130 as well but hard to find a decent example that doesn't cost the earth. But am very happy with the 110, and its a good excuse to get a new trailer:D
