Had 2, 2.4 pumas, and just picked up 2 weeks ago brand spanky 2.2 130 hcpu, not sure if it's the fact that it's lighter or what but it seems to crap all over the 2.4 for drivability and performance, havnt put all of my work stuff on it yet which will bring it up to around the 3 ton mark, also getting good economy out of a very tight engine...maybe it's just the silly price I bought it for that puts a smile on my face..:D
Hmmm interesting...I havnt heard any bad reports yet about the 2.2...I was expecting an explosion of comments like I would of if I had posted zd30 and the word reliability in the one sentence but I have not...little problems with emission system will be a given as my 2.4 had a failed egr at 60,000 but what I was expecting when suggesting the 2.2 was head,block or turbo failures etc etc but does not seem the case...I suppose the td5 was bagged out by many when it first came out but now has respect amongst most...

We have had Hector (MY2012 HCPU) since August. I fretted lots before committing to the new 2.2 lump -mainly because of what people were writing on forums like this. So far, all the predictions of doom and gloom remain unfulfilled.
I find the 2.2 an excellent unit. Hector is a working truck and spends lots of time offroad grinding through the mud and up and down hillsides hauling heavy loads. Exactly the kind of work that killed our old Toyota.
I have never owned a 2.4 TDCi, but compared to the older Defenders and Series Land Rovers I have driven, the 2.2 is a dream. I have never even noticed the DPF other than the light on the dash at start up.
Never been effected by the notorious turbo hose issue, perhaps they corrected it after the very first batch. So a big thumbs up for the 2.2 from somebody who works it hard in the bush!

Thanks for that...seems as though your happy enough with the new 2.2 then...my 2.4 also had a fair workout compared to most with a mix of on and offroad driving pushing it to its limits which in the long run I regeted due to component failures however the 2.4 never missed a beat sounds as though the 2.2 is the same so far..Quote:

what is the issue with the DPF?
As Alan said, I have never seen the DPF light come either, only on igintion on. I love my truck and except for the turbo hose coming loose and the hose clamp rubbing on the hose next to it, it's been great. The way I look at it, "**** Happens" and as my neighbour has a new VW Jetta and has been back 3 times for a dodgey alternator only returning 9v to the battery(took them that long to agree to replace it) I dont think it matters what brand of car it is, they all play up occasionally, with the level of technology in them these days it's inevitable. Just do it, you know you want to!;)

I've only test driven the 2.2 in a D90 yet but it seemed smooth, quiet and pretty refined to me. A little on the labouring side... but that might be cause it was a brand new car - still not warn in.
I have an 07 Ranger with the 3.0L Duratech TDI in it (92000 km). very smooth engine with great power. I've had no real issues with it apart from a oil hose dying - which isn't really an engine issue... just a wear and tear thing as far as i'm concerned. My Ranger is ex-council, they have hundreds of them here and if they can stand up to some random driver beating the living daylights out of it for 3 years then they must be an ok engine. I think that the 3L ranger engine is a "square" stroke (is that the right term? the bore is the same as the stroke....) whereas the 2.2 is a longer stroke so that should make it better IMO.
