    excuse my ignorance Puma?

    In 1985 I bought a new County and kept it for 15 years, it cost a bit to keep it on the road but I had a great time in it and have fond memories, I am about to re aquaint myself with the marque and noticed references to the LR Puma everywhere. Can someone please fill me in on what this is as I cant seem to find any references to it via the LR web site. I dont want one as I note it seems to have a few problems but I hate not knowing. Thanks in advance

    Hi, as far as I am aware, Puma refers to Defenders powered by the Ford derived 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine with the associated 6 speed gearbox. Lots of other minor changes too, no doubt. Cheers, 130man.

    There were some big changes to the Defender in 2007, with one of them being the fitting of the Ford TDCi engine... This engine is known as the 'Puma' and the name has sort of stuck ever since.

    And oh what a wonderful vehicle it is too

    Having had a new one, and been around Toyo's,, the Puma/LR marque is no different to anything else in the "trouble dept". it's just LR is just soo much more capable. IMO

    As correctly stated already, the name 'Puma' was a term coined by the workers on the engine production line for the 2.4TDCi Ford engine. Also used in the Ford Transit. it's just a nickname that stuck for the 2007 onward Defenders.

    The main problems with the model seem to have been ironed out in the first two years - with some warranty fixes being applied for oil flinging on the handbrake, a vacuum pump issue and other little things.

    The new version (from 2011 I believe) is a 2.2TDCi but I know little about the differences - I suspect only the power and torque outputs. The bonnet still has the bulge!

    I have a 2008 model (2.4l) and have had no significant issues with it at all other than a bunged-up EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) unit after 100,000kms and the occasional incident of the engine overheating because I've blocked up the radiator with mud from driving too fast through stirred-up bogs!

    If you get one and you're going to lift it 2" or more, you'll need a DC prop shaft.

    Yes, there are more electrical components in the Puma Defenders than in the Deefers of the past but it's still a Land Rover Defender and if you can't find out how to improve, change or fix something on this website then I'd be very surprised indeed.

    "PUMA" is the engine code for the Defenders with Ford sourced engines.

    I may get correct here but, I am pretty sure the Engine code for the TD5 Defenders was "STORM"

    Nissan use codenames too, the engine code for zd30 is 'The Grenade'
