My defender130 98 would not start this morning no power (lights on dash)so for some reason I wiggled this button and the dash would light up then go off again. I held button and started car and it run.
I assume its some sort of solenoid factory ? Can I replace

Have you owned your 130 from new? If not, could be some sort of anti-theft gadget. If it is on the outside of the seat box it won't be factory fitted.
Looks and sounds like a simple kill switch malunction. Pull it out and join the two wires up that are under it and it should be solved... Or replace with another kill switch.
Hard to tell from you picture but looks like the battery isolation "key" I fitted to mine. Remove the seat and look in front of the battery and see if the battery cables go to a round isolater with brass nuts each side.
I think that the "red" key has broken off and is playing up. Try and get the old key stub out and simply replace. I got several spares from Repco for about $5 each.
I have broken one and had the same issue. Hope this helps.
Cheers
Nino.
It is a battery isolator switch with the handle broken off.
The red bit is the remains of the removable handle.
Probably dirty or loose connection.
