    Motul Gear 300

Does anyone think Motul Gear 300 75w-90 is ok to put in a Puma gearbox.
Its a bit hard to find the Castrol BOT.

    Puma gearbox oil

Hi, I investigated this issue recently and have now just completed a 14,000 k trip towing a van (2.7t), I used fully synthetic Pen-rite 75-85 GL4, it must be a 4 not a 5, if you use a 5 it offers “too” much protection for the yellow metal and will eventually wear out the synco rings. The OEM is Castrol if you wish to pay the cost from a dealer it is very good quality. I do use mobil full synthetic GL5 in the rest of the drive line and it is going ok, it may be considered by some as an overkill but I am using the vehicle under extreme conditions. Currently the vehicle has 39,000 k,s and when the drive line is really hot towing a big load the transfer is noisy in the “float” throttle position, under normal non towing I do not experience this, I envisage this to be expansion causing excessive clearances in the transfer box, this may be of help to you.
PS: Pen-rite is easily purchased through most retailers.

Thread resurrection because I'm also considering using the Motul Gear 300 in my Puma's gearbox.

William, you say that GL-5 is not good for the MT82, but the technical sheet for this oil says GL-4 and GL-5, so now I'm confused!?

Also, see this post (Another Puma Gearbox Oil Question) where Rick says:

    In no particular order.

    1. Motul Gear 300.
    2. Castrol Syntrax 75W-90
    3. Redline MT90
    4. Amsoil MTG

The first two are dual rated GL4/5's but are yellow metal safe, the next two are lower additised GL4's.

I really like Gear 300 in the R380 and I've used Syntrax for 290,000km now in a Patrol (except for 3,000km with MT90 and the prior 90,000km or so with Fuchs 75W-90) with zero leaks, zero noise and excellent performance still @ 390,000km.

All four are dedicated manual gearbox fluids.

I tried really hard to find the Castrol BOT oil but eventually googled it and found it was Castrol Syntrax Universal plus 75W -90
I used it in the gear and transfer boxes.
    AlanH.

PS. I used to use Penrite in other vehicles but LR seem to be fairly specific about oils in the Puma plus I detest oils described as "kick ass" as in some Penrite website ads.

I'm really confused, the penrite website recommends 75w-90 pro gear for puma's MT82 gear box and claims the oil meets Ford M2C200-C. But the oil is a GL5/GL6 grade.

I'm so concerned because my puma's gear box is filled with 75w-90 pro gear oil. The bright side is my puma shifts very smoothly at the moment. Should I do a oil change?

I'm using The Motul Gear 300 75w-90 in my 110 Puma for gear, transferbox and front diff. (my rear Torsen diff require LSD oils and I'm actually using one from Castrol).

About the Motul Gear 300 I appreciate smooth gear change and excellent, above average technical specs.

Also the price and availability are very good here in Italy.

    BS.

Most all modern GL5 manual transmission fluids are buffered if they use a sulphur-phos additive package to prevent yellow metal discolouration.
If in doubt check for the copper colour discolouration test number, 1a and 1b are safe for bronze synchro use.
Some formulations use other EP additive packages that aren't a problem with yellow metals.

Premium and safe ones that come to mind are Motul Gear 300 and Castrol Syntrax.

I've been using Motul Gear 300 for years in an R380 (oh the horror!, it's a 75W-90 fluid in a g/box originally specced with a DexII ATF!! ) and it still shifts well @ 320,000km.

Used Castrol Syntrax for over 300,000km in a GU Patrol (current odo reading is 425,000km) and that car still shifts as well as new, up or down!

Never, ever use a straight diff oil, always try and use a manual transmission or transaxle fluid, the additive package is optimised for optimum synchro use and life.

As stated in the TDS The Motul Gear 300 will not wear or corrode any components of the gearbox.

    From the TDS:
"Suitable for any type of seal and yellow material used in gearboxes design."

I have replaced the gearbox oil from the stealer-supplied stuff to Motul Gear 300.

First impressions after the 25km drive back home: there is definitely an improvement in the gear changes. Much less notchy, esp when cold and less clanging as well.

I also replaced the oil in the transfer box with Motyl Gear 75w90 (Motylgear 75W90 - Motul)

Engine is running very well on Fuchs Titan SyperSyn F 5w30
