I fitted a Disco handbrake lever like Justin C & as Flagg says. Trouble is I keep reaching for where it was
. S'pose I'll get used to it. Easy enough job to do.

I can't see the point in this, really I cant...
Maybe I've been driving Defenders with a standard hand brake for too long??
My suggestion would be to focus your attention to the other end of the cable and make that end work properly, but that's a whole different thread!

I found the standard position of Defender handbrake annoying. Have moved it exactly 5 inches to the left. No need to do any modification to the cable. Of course it was necessary to cut a piece out of the (plastic) transmission tunnel and make a metal mount and pieces to cover the holes. A trial and error fiddly job. Was made easier because I had earlier had the transmission tunnel off and cut it in half lengthways, in front of and behind gear levers. So only needed to remove and further cut the right side. Re the bit that bulges into the corner to provide clearance to the transfer box under the floor, there is now a flat step that is about an inch higher than the floor so no alteration to where floormat fits.
The job I have done is in some parts a bit rough and could be tidied up a bit, including making it completely airtight. Have other priorities on what is basically a farm vehicle though. However, as apparently lots of Defender drivers do not like the standard handbrake position, seems there is potential for someone to produce a kit to achieve what I have done. Including templates of where to cut. Maybe anyone interested who is not too far away (from Nathalia district) could come and have a look, take measurements and use it as a model for an improved version. Or could possibly arrange to check it when vehicle makes occasional trip to Melbourne.

I just bought a couple of those kicker kits from Les Richmonds. I find the handbrake digs into my knee on long trips. Another option would be to fit a soft foam tube around it - I tried that for many years and it worked well. I'll see how easy these kicker kits are to fit and if they work.

I make no claim in mechanical competency, but having had the hand brake off a couple months ago that kicker thing looks easier to install than hanging your spare on the Puma's rear door!
The concept is sound as most people over 5'10" only touches the handle bit of the hand brake with their leg. If it really moves over that much as in the picture I'll definitely be going there as well.
BTW there is an essential thread on here on reassembling your hand brake and the fat rubber plug thing that goes into the lever assembly that's worth a read. Don't think I would have gotten it back together without!
