Creeks and rivers are full of sand / silt, water may have entered the fuel filling cap if it was submerged. If it was a dirty creek I'm pretty sure silt could get through also.

Wading cannot account for an "ice cream cup" of dirt, unless the fuel tank filled up with ~20L+ of water at the time, which would have resulted in the engine stopping immediately.


As has been stated, the dirt got into the fuel either:

1. In the fuel - in which fault would [IMHO] lie with the servo or LR (depending on if it was above or below allowable levels)
2. Through the breather - breather issues have been documented in Pumas AFAIK - in which case the fault would be with LR.
3. Malicious damage - which seems the least likely.

EDIT: 20000 km @ 10 l/100 km = 40g of dirt with fuel still meeting specs according to the worldwide fuel charter.

However the Australian Diesel Fuel Standard: http://www.environment.gov.au/atmosp...ds/diesel.html
says 0.05% water and sediment is permissible!!! Which is ~0.7 kg water and sediment based on the above.

Let me get this straight , you've had the 90 back about 4 months since it was stuck in Townsville and done about 4000k's since you got it back?
Now just to be clear the water driving was before or after the FNQ and Brisbane repairs?
So your defender sat in a yard for a very long period was trucked back to Brisbane and fitted with a new fuel system but there is no way according to LR that the breather ,which has been a common problem on certain pumas, is at fault OR their yard was guaranteed 100% secure in both Townsville and Brisbane so no vandal or annoyed/frustrated worker could get to your vehicle and contaminate the fuel? I seem to recall a disco driver complaining about his gps unit being flogged after an overnight repair at a Qld dealer?
Going to sound like a conspiracy theorist but 4k after a service and major repairs you have a mechanic from the dealership that held your car for a extended period saying suck it up.

If you mean me I've never said that I work for the LR dealer in townsville....sorry bud. But I do think it highly unlikely that a tech would have done that. No gain to them they just fix cars?

It's not so much the diagnosis of the sand being the problem, it's the lack of explanation as to how it got their in the first place.
I'd be thinking it unlikely that sand from a trip several thousand kms away would be presenting an issue now, and if I read right you had it serviced 3000kms ago?
If Pumas have a known, recorded issue of breathers letting crap in and you've got crap in the tank then 2+2 kind of looks like 4.
As Leeroy has said, he's not trying to have a dig at LR, or even their diagnosis. It's how it got in in the first place that's the issue.

close, the major repairs were done in Townsville(where the car was for around over 2 months from memory) and then most of those re-repaired here in Brisbane within 2 weeks of the car being back here, what exactly was re-repaired I am not sure exactly as the Townsville dealer will still not tell me what work was done on my car when they had it. so I cannot be sure if it was in fact re-repairs or new warranty repairs to the fuel system.

After reading your previous post in Townsville and this one, I think you should double think about yr heated argument with the townsville side.
Have you upset someone or that one passed the blame onto those working on your cars there?
If the contamination is done deliberate, it can only be by someone with mechanical mind. That is it will not show up immediately, and it's not covered by warranty.
If you are tight on budget ,the suggestion is to leave this truck for the time being and come back later in life when the finance permits. As judging from this forum there are countless no. of issues that can happen and that costs after warranty.
Defender with it's iconic name should be tough and not troubled by all these issues. I just wonder how it can survive in the wild.

Hi oppie, first post? welcome to the forum!

I'm highly doubtful that someone at the dealer would have done that, It is probable but I would like to think that is below them.
I am not pointing the finger at anyone, I think I am just having a run of bad luck and hopefully it will pass.

there is still a mystery around how the sand got in my tank. but I do not think it worse pursuing anymore as it will just be time consuming and costly.
I love my Defender and really do not want to sell it or anything like that.
I am in a tight financial spot yes, having taken a pay cut during a change of role at work and now being on reduced hours during some tough times at my employer all have left me struggling to meet the repayments on my car. so this has come at a very bad time, but it could happen to anyone. I will take it on the chin and just keep 'truckin'.

on a lighter note it seems after a lengthy (see near 3 hours) discussion with my insurance company they may cover the repairs after they have the 'damage' assessed. . it comes at a high cost due to my age (got to love being under 25!) the excess is still less than the cheapest quoted solution to my problem buy the dealer. so Fingers crossed that they will repair for me, I just need to find some money quick (may see some items for sale in the classified soon! haha!)

once the car is back to me from repairs I think it will sit for a while while I save to have additional fuel filters/water traps installed and some form of engine monitoring device fitted, in hopes to try and avoid these issues may they arise in the future.

Maybe an update is in order here?

so the dealer finaly got the car running Yesterday, with the replacement of the Injector pump, i am now waiting on a replacement EGR gasket from the UK then hopefully the car shall be returned to me.

I hope this will be the end to all my fuel problems as the entire fuel system has been replaced twice, and the injector pump and intank pump 3 times, and god knows how many fuel filters have been replaced.

The car is yet to hit 20,000kms (depending on how much the dealer wants to drive it for as they want to do an 'extended' road test an the car is getting pretty close to 20,000kms) it has had 3 full services also. so hopefully my problems will be over now and I can go enjoy my car :)
