So the 90 broke down again, with a mystery!

Hello guys,

I've spoken to MR Auto now and a mate who is a heavy diesel mechanic and i've decided to have the car towed home and look at it myself with his help and if all else fails send it to MR to replace the VCV as they have quoted far under half that of the dealer for the same repair, and I may be able to scrape that kind of money together.

also had a read of this thread, its not the same issue but it outlines a lot of things that are probably worth me trying before I spend money on expensive parts that I cannot afford:

Most insurance companies do cover for damage caused by contaminated fuel.

They also cover mechanical issues where the damage is caused by negligence, accident or malicious intent.

So if someone undoes your wheel nuts and the wheel falls off - you are not covered.

If a rock flys up and cuts a brake line and you have brake failure - you are not covered.

Etc etc

For sure you are driving along and have a timing belt failure and the pistons hit the valves then you are not covered.

I would revisit this issue but maybe at the stage you are at with everything already pulled apart etc and replaced it might be harder to claim. Likewise if it is a design issue with the air inlet for the tank then no, however if the issue is putting dodgy fuel in from a garage then that is negligence on their part that has caused damage to your vehicle which is claimable.

It all depends on what the damage is and how it was caused and this does not seem to be clear.

My take is that it is the tank air vent - it let sand, dirt and water into the tank. The water has gone through to the injection pump and damaged it, the sand has collected in the filter and got no further making it hard for the lift pump to pump fuel through.

I bet there was no sand past the fuel filter but there is water in the pipes on the engine side of the fuel filter.

possible damage from Water past the filter? what things should I check/replace?

I think it will be too hard now to try and claim insurance as the dealer has now 'fixed (see removed) the evidence of the underlying issue, the fuel is now clean and new, there is now a new filter, and the pipes all flushed.

I could not prove what servo it came from if thats where it indeed came from.
though the dealer tells me ice creme container full I have only seen a small sample they showed me, so it is possible they are leading me on there?

either way its coming back home now rather than paying $160ph labor for something my best mate can do for free whilst he is between jobs :)

I have been following this thread with some interest as I drive a MY13 90

If sand was sucked into the fuel tank through the breather where is the breather located and is this a common Puma problem.

I do not think there is an issue with the puma as far as the breather location goes,

as for those saying that I just do not like listening to a mechanic, this is not the case, as i have stated in this thread previously I have no issues with my dealer, I just cannot afford the repairs right now, and so it only seems logical to try things that are not going to cost me thousands of dollars which I do not have, worst case i have to have it repaired when I can afford it, or i find that one of the cheaper/free thing I can try fix the car I am better off..
If I had the money I would happily have the dealer continue with the work the want to do.

Leroy where was you breather located?

Someone said further back that there was an issue with breathers being located directly behind the wheel and taking in crap such as water to the tank.

That has been known to happen may explain the sand.

according to the dealer the breather line was fine and sealed and not the issue(based on them saying all pipes were fine, not that they said specificly the breather was fine), but yes it is behind the wheel. . . I'm assuming the dealer would have been able to see if there was an issue with the breather when they removed the tank and checked all the other fuel lines?

Leyroy I found this back a bit

I have not water proofed my puma (2012 90) and do not have a 'snorkel' and ive had mine in about 1 mtr of water, moving with a decent bow wave, ive also had it sitting in watter more around 700mm so above the recommended wading depth, only ill efect was yes water int he 'brain box' which causes my rear wiper to move on its own accord untill I pulled the fuse, dried the box out replaced fuse. . no further issues (that was ages ago, Mulgo ex-box is the best solution and I will fit one when I can afford it)

Sounds to me that this could be the problem.
