Noise when accelerating

Hmmm, makes me wonder if it is just to do with the turbo intake being noisier with the new Garrett units, has anyone else had this problem with a new Garrett turbo? Only seem to get this sound while the turbo is winding up, once I ease up on the accelerator it quietens back down.

Haven't noticed any loss of power at all, in fact, she is driving better than she has for some time. Will drop in a boost gauge today to see what the turbo is reading.

Anyone know any tricks to quieten the thing down, or shut it up altogether? I suppose I could fix my radio and just turn the volume up:D

I think I may have found my problem. My egr blanking plate is leaking exhaust gas there is black soot everywhere. I will let you know how I get on.

I have driven about 2 million km in turbo diesels during my driving life and have frequently come across this issue. In fact on my 80s LC we have had to do the manifold machining a couple of time snow during it's 550k km life.

Most mechanics don't deal with such issues - you need to speak to machinist shops who get called upon to fix these things once mechanics give up.

My 80 series 1HDT did 550,000 + klm before the cam seized, the Exhaust manifold had never been off, never leaked.

But I did have to remove and linish the Ex Manifold of my BJ40 Twice & that was a NON Turbo diesel, I could not get the bloody thing to stop leaking.

Ive also had to linish my Td5 Manifold twice, not because it was leaking but because I found it warped when I removed it for other work.

Could over tightening the bolts be adding to the problems that some are having ? Could it be the sealer used / or lack of that is causing a problem for some ?

Quite likely but not exclusively.
I have pulled up quite few people who go around "nipping up" bolts and nuts on manifolds amongst other things, hot and cold "just to be sure" it's tight.

I forced my son to re-torque a number of fasteners on his vehicle after a mate convinced him to heave on a spanner "to be safe".

Another of my favourites are those who douse their hot engine with a pressure washer down at the car wash. Always a good idea around the hot head, turbo and manifolds.... not!

I think I will be investing in a torque wrench before I replace the exhaust manifold gasket and studs, having buggered one of the studs from overtightening the first time round, it is quite possible that some of the others been overtightened, or, for fear of stripping another thread, not tightened enough.
Will probably be a couple of weeks before I get round to it, but will let you know if I have any success with it in terms of that DAMN NOISE:censored:

I've got a spare egr plate gasket for a 300tdi if you need. part # WAL500010L

Thanks for the offer jboot I have sorted the gasket leak and the turbo is smooth and quiet just like I remember from my old defender ute.

Just a bit of an update, haven't had time in the last few weeks to do much on the car between family and work committments, but have noticed that the noise doesn't seem to be anywhere near as bad - not sure if I am just getting used to it, or if it has actually subsided. Did put a turbo boost gauge in, all seems good there, max's out at 15-16 psi, normal suburban driving at 60km sits on 5-6 psi.
Wondering if the noise was caused by a leak in the exhaust manifold gasket, if some soot has deposited there and sealed it up? It is definitely nowhere near as bad as it was. Any suggestions?
Still yet to get around replacing the gasket and studs.....one of these days:D
