Timing belt was just one cog out - what a difference!

Had Dave Dover change my timing belt and water pump today on the 200tdi, I've always been weary of them, so i bit the bullet and had it done at 28K Miles, just to be sure. First time I've had one changed on either 110 I've owned, so actually felt elated seeing for myself how well they hold up.The belt was in perfect condition; I won't mind giving this new belt the full 60K Miles, it looked that good in there.

Water pump was rusted, so a good call to pre-empt that one before we opened it up. For what it is worth in labour, a no brainer really.

the bonus was what Dave found with the timing; the the existing belt was one cog out (retarded). He said 'you might notice a difference" -did I ever!

The turbo is spoiling up earlier, the engine quieter, I can do a good impression of keeping up with traffic, and not grabbing gears on every hill.

And yet again Dave's price if fantastic, and service outstanding.

    Happy Days.

Must be the week for it, I have been unsure of mine too. Having bought the car from someone not so careful with maintenance I decided to do the belt before our Fraser trip in 6 weeks.

    This is what we found

P gasket just about to let go

Water pump OK but changed to be sure, original and had new head due to overheat just before I bought it.

Front crank seal starting to weep

Timing idler bearing starting to go

Timing belt running against front cover even though 300tdi rectification had been attempted

Fan bearing in front cover gone

    Idler bearings for ac going

Bottom turbo hose about to disintegrate due to oil soak

I also then replaced the other two intercooler hoses given the state of the bottom one.

Went for my first drive yesterday afternoon and it now runs great, think one of the intercooler hoses must have had a leak. Nothing like a bit of maintenance.

You must be pretty happy to have fixed all of that. Good call.

I think it's wise to go ahead and get the belt done when purchasing a Tdi. Even if, like mine, it was well within it's life expectancy.

you just don't know what else you will find.

It's even simpler on the 300 like yours, and the feeling of having it all purring like it should is fantastic.

I can't get over how much more power I have, and the fantastic sound of the turbo I just replaced a couple of months back it the icing on the cake.

I sat down the other day and put all the receipts i have for maintenance done on the 110 into a spreadsheet. Been meaning to for a while, and now that I have it gives a really clear picture of what is next to do.

And there is a lot to do...ha!

Next is the wiring, I've got wipers that I have to pull the fuse to stop, gauges that flat out don't work (besides the speedo, which is all I've got to know when I need more fuel!)
