So Mark, with your Aschcroft ATB, do you have HD axles and CV's? Or would it slip before damaging those? If that's the case, I might be able to justify one but adding $1500+ for CVs and axles is slowing down the potential purchase.

I have standard CVs, (aeu2522s, so a bit better than later Defenders have anyway), but HD axles-my 110 was originally 10 spline at the diff so it made sense to upgrade at the same time-ATBs are only available in 24 spline.
I wouldn't hesitate to run standard axles and CVs with an ATB or Trutrac. In fact I have a CV on the way out and it'll be replaced with the aftermarket standard duty alternative, can't afford Ashcroft CVs :(

What do you call later? Yours is 85 (isn't it?), mine is 96 model. Or are you talking newish ones?
I think anything after late 1993 or early 94 will have the smaller, weaker CVs. The changeover was around the time the rears went from drum to disc, I think.
ATB is great on-road, it improves handling noticeably. Off-road its awesome provided you keep both wheels on the ground. Lift a wheel and it sucks. I've found the limits of it usefulness pretty easily. Would be great with TC but in a manual without TC its a bit limited in semi-serious off-roading.
As much as I like it's on-road performance I'm considering an ashcroft front air locker. Hard to beat a locked diff as I've been finding out.
I know a number of people who've fitted chinese lockers (ARB copies) with no issues to date. Mostly front diffs in Tritons.

Lucky 8 has (or did have) a CV and axle sale for $900 ish delivered. Check under the Verandah forum. I PM'd Lucky 8 about 8 weeks ago and the sale price was still on offer.

However I am seeing some conflicting opinions the traction with ATB "TruTrac"...
I'm still kind of leaning towards the chinese lockers..
can anyone give me an idea of fitment costs of a front and rear diff?
mate of mine got two in from Chinasong 4x4 was about $890 landed for front and rears for his old RRC 2 door. from what I could see they were Identical to the ARB and the quality was up there too (this was nearly 3 years ago) never had any issues with them, they even came with a compressor each which also was a dead ringer for the old style ARB compressor. he parted the car out a while ago as the body was too far gone but never once had an issue the lockers.
we pulled the centers out and took them to a diff shop to have them fitted and then put them back in ourselves no idea what it cost him to have them fitted, but i dare say all up landed and fitted fro twin lockers was cheaper than the shelf price on a single ARB.
