TD5 Clutch

Hi there,
I certainly second the use of Valeo clutch etc. Valeo are original equipment for Land Rover and as such are a great choice for replacement parts.

Mine has just been done and l am very happy with it. Make sure you have it done by a Land Rover specialist. Defiantely worth having the various input and output seals done on the 5-speed and transfer also.

Would only do the rear main if it is leaking. Otherwise leave it be was the advice from my mechanic (Defender specialist).

Yeah. I got mine from one stop great box shop uk thru ebay uk. Same price and landed for 780. That's everything including all bushes. I got the rear main seal here.

The clutch feels great and the pedal isn't as heavy.

If you speak to Neale at Rakeway.co.uk he'll sort you out an AP racing clutch plate and matching solid flywheel.

To be honest though if you aren't towing much now and you don't flog the engine then a standard valeo unit will be fine.

Defo do the seals at the same time.

Back on the hunt for a clutch and it seems like Ashcroft transmissions in the UK can supply the AP clutch for not a lot more than a Valeo, as I tow a lot I'm considering going that route but keep the dual mass, but I need to speak to Ashcroft first as I'm also after a Transfer box extended sump to lower the transmission temps when towing. Cost for the Dual mass is £260 and AP clutch is £105.

How about noise and vibration from single mass? I'm thinking on going that way, DMF are too expensive and delicated.

I went for the AP racing clutch and a solid flywheel in the end. I got mine from Rakeway in the UK, they produce the flywheel and also an uprated bearing carrier.

There is a slight knocking / rattling noise at tickover when in neutral and foot off the clutch but it really isn't significant and it disappears completely when you start moving.

I could eat an OEM clutch in 20,000 miles with the loads I used to regularly tow combined with the heavy re-map. This clutch has done 3 times as much work as the previous and shows no signs of wear.

Id thoroughly recommend the mod if you tow frequently and have a remapped car.

The car remains perfectly drivable too. I've had other up-rates clutches in race cars before that are like switches, these are not at all like that.

Gotta agree here - it's a tedious job at the best of times on anything, so you would be mad not to while you have the chance. It will take a little more time now, but it will save you a hell of a lot in the long run. It's worth it for the peace of mind alone IMO :cool:
