I don't think there will be a problem with the studs as from the late series 3 on the studs were the same, but I will check my parts manual to make doubly sure.
As long as the nuts are used that go with the alloys, it should be fine.

Gary from 'CLR 4WD Parts'. (02) 4754 2642, 0412 663 751 has the solid wheel nuts to suit those alloy rims and they are way better in my opinion than the alloys' nut's that have the decorative caps.

You shouldn't have any issues with studs. I ran alloys on my 1995 Defender for yonks, but you will need to purchase the alloy wheel nuts as mentioned

It is also dependent on what drive flanges you have as to whether the alloys will fit on properly.
Some of the aftermarket drive flanges available have to much metal for alloys to fit on over them.
I believe the later Maxi Drive flanges were machined out to allow fitment of alloy wheels over them.
Some alloys will also not fit over the early one peice axle/drive flange on 90 models (I don't know whether this applies to early 110 models though).

Thanks everyone for your good advise. I have been thinking hard on this one and while I would LOVE the new rims, I am not sure they are really where I should go with this Defender - I'm going to sand blast and paint my current steel rims. After all, there are lots of other calls on my money.

So, I bit the bullet and got the new wheels anyway!

I went to get a a couple of tyres last weeks and found that the old wheels where in pretty bad shape AND I would need to have tubes in them. Having fixed plenty punctures in tubed and tubeless tyres, I did not want to have to deal with tubes! So I phoned up the seller and he still had the wheels - I went out and bought them. Now they are on the Defender I am VERY happy with them.

They are all 16mm (all proper Landrovers since late Series 2a), but I suspect the stud length may differ.
