Puma 2.4 dyno tune & remap

Hi all, I have browsed the web and this fine forum looking for a place in Melbourne where I can get a custom remap.

I have had Peter at Bell Auto service send me a remap which I like and highly recommend (choofs a bit of smoke though). Since then I have put a Allisport intercooler in the car as well as a bigger turbo. Now it blows more smoke under load.

I want to take the car to a place in Melbourne where I can get it put on a dyno and a custom tune done to the car rather than just plugging a programmer in - which is fine for a standard engine.

Has anybody done this or know someone they can recommend. Reading the web pages they are "all the best" - forums like this give me better information from other enthusiasts..

    Hey Symo,

I've got a Pete's latest map (6months old) and it seem very good. Yeah a bit of smoke but not over the top.

I've also got an AliSport intercooler, Decat pipe and centre muffler removed.

I have been considering Pete's upgrade turbo, is this what you have got ?

If it's I am very interested in your thoughts and results from the up grade.

If you haven't already, rip out the factory ducting to (mud guard to the air box) and replace with some 90mm tube. The factory ducting is all different shapes and very restrictive.

Nugget on this forum makes a good kit.

    Cheers

Hey Drover, I got my turbo upgraded by Fred Smith, I did a bearing in it and it was sent of to a place in sunshine I think that re-co turbo's. They know about the cars and for a small fee they rebuilt it with a bigger comp.

Not "OMG" look at this thing go performance but a marked improvement above about 2200 RPM ( I don't want to turn my engine into a race engine and kill it in 80,000k so happy with it).

Getting more smoke though especially if I am lazy with the gearbox and let the thing pull hard up a hill under 2,000 rpm (I have cruise control fitted and it can be hard on the engine on the freeway at 110k when you hit a long hill.. speed drops to 90k and out comes the smoke.

A tune for the car done on a dyno will be the best way forward I think - Peter BAS Map is great and the guy is a real gentleman but I don't think you can go past a rolling road and a kid with a laptop and a propeller on his cap...

Sounds like your turbo compressor is now too big and can't provide the boost down low.

The propellor head kids with laptops don't know how to tune diesels. Let alone EDC17 diesels.
Your best option is to go back to BAS, tell them it's overfuelling and smoking down low (with honest amount of how much and at what rpm) and what you've had done to the turbo.
They can reduce fuelling to cut the smoke, but since you've got a bastardised turbo now you are going to lose significant low end torque by the time you're rid of the smoke.

If you don't have boost and EGT gauges on a tuned diesel, you're in dangerous territory.

    ^ Thats on the money...

Contact Pete and provide him with specifics of data...
What RPM point, how much load you're applying, What you have done to the turbo, intercooler, exhaust etc... Tyre size...

Then what you want it to do..

As stated that larger wheel has now moved everything up the range... The smoke is fuelling up due to lack of boost lower down.

Keep us informed how you go..

This is a great Forum. Peter is a great guy too. I emailed him last night and he said the only way forward is to give him the data on the turbo and he will tweak the tune.

I am my own worse enemy with the car and don't let it spin - If I drive at 100K in 6th and plant the right to get up a hill and RMP drops below 2,000 it smokes. If I kick it down to 5th, (2,500 RMP) and plant its smoke free. so Changing gears and driving abit harder works well. But will send the data to Peter and see what he can do.

Also the only place I found that will do a custom tune is Bruce Davis performance in Sid Knee. If I must a cant take a bit of a trip north for a few Daze.... Just no one in Melbourne that doesn't want to sell me a DP chip or some other add on....

I'd suggest a scan-gauge or physical boost gauge to see how much boost it has in those smoking situations. Send those numbers off to BAS and that'll help them with the remap.

    Or get a stock turbo.

I can assure you that if you fit an egt you'll stop your over fuelling driving style - watching your turbo get cooked off the dial will give you something to think about for sure!

That too. Modern diesels can produce scary EGT while still running smoke free. If you've got smoke, you're running very hot.

    Interesting post..Thank You.
Pete at BAS definitely seems to be the best, BUT, for me, who is ABSOLUTELY HOPELESS mechanically, he is too far away from me, in case anything went wrong, & it probably wouldn't even be his fault.
Like you, I've found no-one in Melbourne that can individually program my ECU & tune the engine etc, so I'm probably going to leave it standard.
But, ya never know, ECU, intercooler, & a tune, does have appeal. There is no way I'd ever fit a generic "chip".
    Pickles.
