    TD5 New lease on life...

    I've lived with my Td5's factory performance for 11 years now, and I was relatively happy with it. But recently I bought another defender - a puma 2.2 - and I also started doing some towing of a camper. Both of these made me less than happy with the td5. In fact I nearly decided to get rid of "Fender".... BUT I am very happy I did not.

    I decided a little while ago to get it remapped, I also at the same time had it de EGR'd and De Catted and De Muffed. The map is from NSW - Bruce Davis I think. Well the difference was startling! You can hear the turbo spool up with just a very slight crack of the throttle. The power response is actually better than the 2.2 - ie there is no perceptible lag. The TD5 used to be very sluggish at lower rev's this is gone. And the power is nice and smooth and there throughout the rev range. It is noisier - but at less than full stick it's actually quite pleasant. At Full stick - Full Load - at around 3000rpm it will wake the dead though.

    I have a steep hill near me that I use to compare vehicles. The old TD5 would barely manage 60k's max. The 2.2 Does 80ks.. The new TD5 hit 90 yesterday and was still pulling. (mind you my wife heard this from home... some 4ks away!)

    Any way as I've seen so many other people comment - I wish I had done it sooner.... But at 240,000k's the old Fender has a new lease on life.

    How much did this said remap cost? I'm looking at buying a TD5 D2a and was going to remap it also. Last quote was $1600.

    Retail was around $900. The Bruce davis map was recommended to me by my Land Rover service guru, as being the most reliable. the process involved removing my ECU - and posting it to sydney... (Took 2 weeks because Aussie post lost it...)

    It is possible to remap it for much less if you are willing to learn how to use nanocom etc.

    Pleased for you, a well performing TD5 is great. But do be mindful that with a remap your exhaust gas temperatures can become an issue ignorance of which can be detrimental to the engines health.

    Jazzman, $1600 for a remap! That's BS. Unless you have been quoted for upgraded components such as an intercooler you shouldn't be anywhere near that figure. Last I remember a bloke on this forum (Josie? TD5 inside?) was offering a $400 remap and I've never heard anything bad about his work. Maybe worth investigating.
