These are good figures for the 2.4.
Mine was doing around the 10l/100 when first purchased, but when the first ECU was replaced, it went up to about 12l/100, now with its second ECU, its started off at about 14l/100, but is slowly,,,, very slowly, coming back down again. We'll see where it ends up in a couple of weeks.
I'm no slouch behind the wheel in the city traffic, so I dont expect it to be really ecconomical.
On a recent run from New Norfolk Tas. to Bega NSW. Both vehicles travelled the same route together.
130 Big Cab 300tdi Ex Telstra over a weigh bridge 2.6 tonne empty. Plus approx 700 kg tools and scaffolding so all up 3.3 tonne, 11.23 ltrs /100k.
1985 110, 100% original (still has working Boge leveller) 3.5 V8, LT95 approx. 200 kg gear. All up weight I guess about 2.1 tonne, 14.9 ltrs/100k.
The 110 had the carbys over hauled, the motor tuned as well as "an over the pit inspection" for road a worthy and rego before the trip. It was running sweet.
The 300tdi would out pull the 110 (just) on the flat and small inclines, however on big long 2nd gear climbs the 110 would pull away into the distance.
The County is way quieter at 100kph and a nicer drive than the 130. The 130 has been extensively fitted out with lead based sound proofing material.
Went to Tas. for work (not to buy another car) saw the old County for sale, it was too original to pass up.
Cheers Pat.
1984 110 cab/chassis with a retrofitted HCPU with a Nissan LD28 transplant :D for the 2.25 petrol that was in it. 235/85-16 maxxis bighorns on D1 rims and a std LT77 coupled to a 1.4 transfer box in place of the 1.6 it came with. I get 9l/100km if driving like nana, and 10-12l/100km if maintaining open road speed (100kph). It is a 110 HCPU so no trailer usually required but under a full load in the back (camping or firewood) I generally get around 12-14l/100km.
Glad to be getting similar figures to new tech from old tech.
All figures are without a headwind
My 2010 110 sw 2.4 has been getting pretty consistently high 10s to low 11s per 100kms with full size steel roofrack(heavy). A couple of weeks ago I took it off for slight modification. Since having it off the fuel consumption has dropped to low/mid 9s per 100 kms
Is it better to struggle in a higher gear or rev higher in a lower gear ?? ( while towing ie going up some hills and what not ...) cheers
For fuel economy
I would say bad, because if your struggling, your outside your optimal torque band, and various components are being stressed unnecessarily. But that's a lay mans opinion.
My 2009 110. best 8.4, worst 11.2 towing trailer with two motorcycles and a load of heavy tools etc. plus loaded to max inside.
average with light or no load is around 9.5.
I had Bruce Davis remap it but as he put it with a mild remap.
Just worked out the economy on my first full 110 litre tank since buying the Defender and it came out at 9.2 l/100km.
I filled up at Grafton and drove to Brisbane and then around the city so it was mostly highway and motorway. I'm very happy with that. Its certainly good for such a large vehicle considering the wife's little Yaris, which looks like a mini car beside the Defender, is averaging 7.0 l/100kms.
Incidentally, I downloaded a very simple free app called Fuel Economy Calculator from Play Store which I recommend, as it was much easier to use than another one I tried. All it needs is volume of fuel used and distance travelled and it does the job.
My TDi I normally get 10, but on a recent trip to Perth with my 1200kg trailer dropped to 12.9. It got worse in a headwind at one stage, but returned to 12.9.
