Knocking noise from B-pillar

If the gear box mounts were loose wouldn't this be visible through the stick rocking forward when braking but not shifting?

Your description is exactly what's happening in my car too. I even wiggled the seat belt guide, but ruled it out as the cause.

It's interesting to note that Damo has a very new 110 and has the same noise. My car is only five months old and still has less than 3000km on it, so I don't think anything is significantly worn yet. I've also checked the doors and they're all properly shut and the rear door stay is rock solid too.

As BilboBoggles says, the dealers never seem to hear these things, so I'm not going to them with it yet.

So I rotated the plastic sleeve on the door catch this morning and it stopped! Might look into the third party x something catches

Rotated the sleeve this morning, on the way to the dealer, and the noise stopped for c.15 mins then came back.

Went out with the technician for a spin, we had rotated the sleeve again and no sign of the knocking. So he probably thinks I made it up.....

He greased the striker (his term for the sleeve) and moved it inboard slightly so it grips the door tighter against the frame. No recurrence since in c.90mins city driving

Hats off to the dealer, whilst listening for the absent knocking the technician volunteered that the rear driver door card was rubbing and the main driver side trim panel in the load area could do with adjusting and booked me in.

Mate that sounds good, which dealer?

Years ago when I worked for a BMC dealer , we had a Austin Freeway come in with a rattle in the B- pillar. We were eventually given permission to cut the pillar open only to find a nut hanging by a bit of string & a note tied to it which read "TOOK YOU A LONG TIME TO FIND IT", it had been put in during assembly in the factory.

Thanks to tact for suggesting that the plastic sleeve on the door striker was the likely culprit. I rotated the sleeve on the driver's door striker 90 degrees and it has stopped the sound...for now. I was surprised at how much of a notch was already worn in it.

I have a 2009 110 with 60k and it has an intermittent rattle near the A pillar.
The rattle in fact eminates from where the roof is connected to the vertical body panel. This connection can be viewed by looking down through the Alpine window. The rattle can be eliminated temporarily by spraying silicon spray along the join. There is a rubber seal between the roof and body and therefore I don't spray wd40 or such. Permanent cure of the rattle will probably need removal of the roof and that may not even work given the movement between the roof and body panels with flexing. Oh dear, the joys of Defenders!

You're welcome mate. It was a hard noise to track down, and most annoying how it seemed to come right beside your right shoulder.

Good news is that after 47 failed adjustments (that rid the noise for minutes or days only) I finally got it so the noise has been gone more than a year

Mine's a 2010 110, and I also had a very distinct rattle from the A pillar, drivers side where it joins the roof line. The sealant they use outside above the windscreen, and below the roof gutter was also cracked on both sides. In fact on the drivers side you could apply upward pressure to the roof and the crack would open quite alarmingly :eek:.

I removed the roof lining and found the roof is attached to the A pillar by a big screw. The head of the screw on the drivers side had sheared off completely and was rattling around in the lining. It was a pig of a job trying to remove the stuffed screw to replace it.

The passenger side was also loose, but still intact.

Before tightening both sides and apply thread lock, I sealed the cracks outside with sikaflex. Then got the wife and kids to sit on the roof rack near the front whilst pulling the roof down with the screws. Did this maybe 6 months ago, so far so good.
