    td5 Intercooler.. which one now

    Hi Guys

I have been running an Allard intercooler for 4 years now. Original turbo running about 19.5psi boost (just short of overboost error) several months back I noticed the performance was down a little, the EGT was up a bit and the thing was smoking quite well... turned out there were several splits along the welds / seams on the input side and also around the mounting brackets..

I had the intercooler repaired by a shop that custom builds intercoolers for their custom vehicles. Neat and tidy repair, but it looks like its on its way again. The ally is very thin and is fatiguing from constant inflation / deflation of the intercooler.

So instead of getting it repaired again and again.. as it will continue to fail... are there any decent priced and slightly harder wearing intercoolers on the market that are the same or bigger than the allard with similarly tighly arranged cooling fins?

    Look forward to your advice!

I have an ASE that I bought off another forum member as he had bought another from the UK at a lot more cost (cannot remember the brand maybe Allisport?) but he reckons the ASE was much better. I have had no dramas with the ASE and is extremely well made and strong. Only issue on the Defender is the bonnet latch hit the top and I had to trim.

Thanks Both.. Will see what my options are with those 2.. see if I can get the parents in law to slip on in their suitcase

Pretty dissapointed with the allard, especially as its just the standard turbo..

I wacked an Allisport in my TD5 and it's a great bit of kit.
You do need to be wary of the bonnet latch as it does touch the top of the intercooler.
EGT's are down approx 100c and there's plenty of go.
I have had a remap though.

    Thanks for that.

Remapped here also (for several years!) pulls like a train, except when there is a dirty great hole in the intercooler

pre turbo EGT's at 4.5t+ up a long hill in 5th gear (towing boat, fully loaded with 4 adults, gear, food and booze) doing 100kph approach 800degC and then I have to back off..

On the flat at same speed with same load it runs at about 11-12psi boost and 450-500degC EGT - the boat is about 4m high tho.. so its like towing a wall..

Along with the new intercooler i'm also debating new turbo (mines got a bit of axial movement) and maybe a warmer map..

did you ground your intercooler, they suffer from electrolysis and get thin over time, I have heard you can get a sacrificial anode for them

What ? Its an intercooler not a radiator. You need an electrolyte and dissimilar metals to be present for electrolysis to take place.
