Shouldn't happen if the dual battery controller breaks the link between 1 and 2 if 1 falls below a certain charge, should it?

Primary battery has a duct that already vents outside

Thanks for that information. Is it necessary to import them or could you get a similar result cheaper with locally available generic door seal?

From my background in the family earthmoving business I've seen about an inch of dust over the top of the grader batteries and they have never let us down... Again. touch wood.
I kow the dust won't hurt the battery but, after seeing how much dust came into the D1 on our Simpson ttrip, I just want to keep the dust and water out of the vehicle if possible.

Aside from all the questions about venting, I strongly recommend a sealed cell battery - wet cells that need topping up are so 20th Century.

... and if you ever roll the car onto its side, can be - umm - exciting.

Don't ask me how I know, please.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Although I agree with what you are saying there is no such thing as a sealed lead battery. The correct terminology is spill proof or Optima call them non spillable.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
