Run on and off the throttle at 80,if it snatches it could well be the splines, pop the rubber caps off the axle drive flanges because they cause it too. Pat
Hi Friends,
Does anyone know how to check for main shaft spline wear easily on a 2013 130?
I am trying to narrow Down possibilities to the 'clonk ' and extremely excessive backlash.
I have checked the a-frame ball joint and it's good, uni joints seem good, all nuts and bolts underneath are tight, and it has a new rear diff and new clutch.
The dealers seem to just brush it off, but I know it's well beyond normal backlash and typical noises that come from a defender- its getting very difficult to drive smoothly and is hard to drive at slow speed without bunny hopping and looking silly.
It is very unenjoyable to drive at the moment, So any alternative suggestions or information on how to check main shaft spline wear would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Nathan

At 47k when I bought my puma it had heaps or backlash on gearchanges. Within hours of getting it home I found one rear axle/ drive flange on rear had heaps of wear so removed them all, cleaned & greased to keep things from getting worse until the bad one was replaced. Did that at 50k & the backlash halved, or better. I then removed tailshafts to chk. flange nuts, all good. I can definately notice it now under the seat so recon it's the shaft everybody calls the adaptor shaft, between the g/box & t'fer case. Can anybody confirm that that was the prob. in their case? I'm about to rem. the t/f case but would like to be sure first.

Justin,
I have had the shaft between the gearbox and transfer case replaced twice now under warranty. I had the same clunk recently and difficult to change gears (especially down) without a big clunk.
I stopped and had to be towed to a dealer. There is a new grease that must be used when you put together the female receiver on the back of the gearbox and the male shaft (both have spline threads that must be put together). Land Rover put out a special bulletin in August this year (Saw the dealers information from LR) about using this grease (injection syringe grease).
So I suspect that your shaft splines are partly warn. It will eventually thread the lot and you will loose drive.
Hope this helps from someone not mechanical minded.
Cheers Brad
OK as I thought it's time for t'fer case removal, son's with hilux's just shake their heads. Are new gen. shafts the only option or is there quality aftermarket ones available?
On a 2013 Puma I would be throwing it back harder at the dealer and insisting they resolve. Dealers must be experts in narrowing down drivetrain clunks, everyones seems to have been in.
Perth Barbagallos replaced my splined shaft thingo and also rear drive flanges. 6-9 months on and its still heaps better than it used to be. I dont expect it'll be so awesome in 3+ years though ...
Barbagallo did mine and replaced rear half shafts as well. Huge improvement and since then, 40K approx., it hasn't deteriorated. Had to work hard to convince the service foreman that the shaft should be greased on assembly though...."it's not a service item" he said!!!!
It may not be an item to be done during service but on assembly it surely should be done automatically.
If not that just tells me bloody LR are stupid for a few cents worth of grease.

Hi ,
had or still have the same loud clunk , can nurse it to avoid , but ultimately at 80km/h on and off the gas , the clunk happens suggesting worn axles. Dealer loctites the axles in place , worked for a while , but back lash is back . So only solution is now replace axles with Maxi Drives at $ 700 fitted. Ill do this as I hate the back lash. It will fix it according to the dealer , who I believe as the Loctite did work for a while.
hope this helps.
Why not just change the flanges?. Pat
