They may have 200 engineers, but most are probably gainfully employed on projects unrelated to the defender for which its end of life was obvious long ago.

Much re-design on what is an uneconomic (hand assembled) platform was probably not justified. The time for a clean sheet of paper re-design was IMHO in the late 80's, not now, but the purse strings were closed tight for a proper re-design for defender, and the disco was given the task to rescue land rover's fortunes.

No one is talking about a full re design. .

It is more about a few basic silly mechanical designs, some have been issues for many, many years and not sorted, for example axle spline/hub issues.
And the recent issues with the gear box splines in the Puma.

Thats bull****,it would cost no more money and take no more time to design a shaft that would last as long as the gearbox, saying that it's not worth it is also bull****,are you saying I shouldn't expect my TDCi to do 470,000k's like my Tdi thats running all original running gear other than a uni or two and four axle drive flanges because it's at the end of it's design life?. Yeh and the fact that most of the parts are made by third parties, are off the shelf, or are designed by other manufacturers...

The cause is fretting corrosion, and dynamic loads due to clearance between the mating parts for assembly purposes adapting a gearbox that wasn't designed to have a transfer case up its ***. Yes you could re-design the the gearbox mainshaft, but .............

It's a very simple adapter shaft that any simple engineer could design, adapter shafts, jack shafts what ever you want to call them have been used for eons,LR didn't invent the wheel designing it. Pat

LR would only have to go back a few models and i am sure they would find a goody.

Same as the hub set up,the RRC and early D1 have a great set up.........
