I supply a DRL controller with DRLs which dims the DRLs to 30% as soon as you switch any lights on, so they can stay on, but not at full brightness at night.
Also, a controller makes it easier to wire them up as you don't have to find an ignition wire in the back of the dash, just wire straight to the battery or other permanent supply as the controller simply senses the voltage change when the engine is started and stopped.

I agree,the white light of the LEDs is much more visible than the yellow light of standard halogens coming out of the sun. Also, we found they were much more visible through the dust of passing vehicles on our Cape York trip.
When the very first DRLs appeared years ago, I thought they were a bit wanky, but now I believe they are a genuine safety addition.
When mobile phones first appeared you had to be a yuppy tosser to have one, but things change once they become 'acceptable' to the masses.
