95 defender rear stub axle seal?
hey guys i have found conflicting information on weather my 95 defender rear axle has a stub seal or not? it looks like it has heavy duty maxi axles but not stub seal when i pulled it apart. could this be the cause of the leak all over my pads and discs?

Generaly when maxi hubs and axles are installed the stub seal is removed to convert the hubs to oil lubed. This seal is not to be confused with the HUB seal which is in the back of the driven hub and seals on the stub axle. This is what will be leaking over the disc and pads.

hmmm interesting. I have replaced the hub seal already and that was definately leaking. looks like i went 5 bolts too far. there was blue sealant everywhere too. was this hylomar? i read a thread on here that when that seal is removed its best to use sealant instead of gaskets.
am i correct in assuming that there is no need for an outer hub seal? there wasnt one on there when i started pulling things apart

Oki, has drive flange, that which the axles splines into and is bolted to the hub, been replaced with a Maxi flange? These have a large nut on them instead of the dinky plastic cap the standard flanges have. If this is the case there is no outer seal, having said that the standard flange
do not have an outer seal either as the factory setup is grease filled bearings so no need for an oilseal. That is the reason for the inner hub seal, so as to keep the diff oil from the greased bearings.

Sounds like silastic rtv blue . That does a good job if you remember that less is better than more!
Follow the instructions to let it sit for an hour b4 you torque the pieces up and it will be good. Also comes in black for the stealth look!

There are several versions of a 'genuine' outer hub seal too, you want an RTC3511, it's the only one that will keep the oil in, (the others are grease seals) and the water out.
