Warranty Service LR dealership or Local LR mechanic

I picked up my 130 this month, The first service is free which is a very minor service within the 1st 1500km , the following service due on 20,000 km and will be charged accordingly. Ill be doing mine at 10,000km intervals.

Im not really keen to take my car to the local Land Rover dealership, I wish to use local LandRover mechanic in Newcastle . The company tells me I still get a full LandRover warranty if I use them as they use genuine Land Rover parts and are authorised by LandRover. Im just worried if sh-*/t hits the fan will this give Landrover a loop hole out

Has anyone else gone down this path ?

I've had my 90 since it was 10 months old.

It has only gone to a dealership for warranty issues or recalls. serviced at 10k intervals by a mechanic who owns a Defender so not only gets done right, gets done with care!

As long as genuine parts are used by a qualified mechanic, you shouldn't have any problems with 'head office'.

While the car is still under warranty, I would be using the dealer for everything.

If the worst happens, they will have no history on your vehicle. I know of people that are having items fixed under "good will" after the warranty has expired.

I would put this down, in part, to always going back to the dealer for services, during the warranty period.

As someone who's now shopping for a 110, I keep reading that I should look for a thorough LR shop log book or walk away.

I worked for JLR. I get mine done at both the dealership and the local specialist (who used to be our foreman lol) and have never had issues with land rover. That said, i've so far had a good relationship with jlr and ive only ever had the car on a truck once. I wasnt even in it lol.

I have been getting mine serviced by the dealer, I had the first 3 years free so no debate there, I went to the local for any other work I wanted done, including pre trip checks, I then took the report to the dealer to get things fixed under warranty. I just got my 160k 5.5yr old service done at the local for the first time, I got a quote from LR dealer and they wanted $1400, the local did it for $890.

One thing I would consider is the Paint/corrosion warranty. It is 6 yrs and has to be inspected every year, I do not know if this needs to be done by LR or not so this is worth checking, I just got a new roof after 5 yrs as the old one had paint blisters on the top, I had to chase down the paint inspection report from Austral as I get it serviced on the Gold Coast now, but without that report done every 12 months they wont have a bar of any corrosion warranty work.
But maybe that can be "outsourced" to the local mech also but I would investigate that.

I think I'm starting to see blisters on mine so might do my next one at the dealers.

    It definitely depends.

In my experience the dealerships who worked on my 110 here in Sydney were worse than terrible. Their inability to resolve almost any issue without causing another or damaging something was matched only by their complete lack of caring.

Pick your dealership very carefully, or it could be an absolute nightmare.

My spider sense tingled when I was at a dealer (Jaguar/Land Rover) to order my 110 the other day.
The salesman obviously knew very little about the Defender, and both he and his immediate senior salesman knew nothing about the warranty. It made me worry that the shop out the back might carry on that lack of knowledge or interest.

Hard call, for example I got mine from Austral, my sales rep was an ex Defender mechanic, and enthusiastic about it. Apparently other reps cannot see beyond the more expensive models.
JuSt had 20,000 service, I reported the rear main seal as faulty, and t they identified the shaft between L 230 to R380 boxes as faulty and replaced
    It at the same time
Mind you all the stories of woe here had me get an indipendent to change the oil and give it an inspection at 5000. 100% ok

So if that's your dealer so far so good

By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
