look 30 years old, things wear out.
i had 2 ton on a tryler a couple of weeks ago
i had a bit of excessive drive-line play, guessed the rear drive shaft front flange had come a bit lose, it happens every now and again. i actually had new bolts and nylocs in the chubby box to do the job.
took off at the lights, and ZZZZIIIIIIRRRRRRRRR no go.
get out no blood on the road, locked centrer diff drove on. it was a drive flange.
broke right front stub drive shaft once.
bent tie rod once, got fatter ones from ebay 200 bucks.
steering box have a big story on this one. popular babble is to swap out for the defender 4 bolt, popular belief is that it is stronger. its all bollocks.
rebuild kit for a 3 bolt is about 35 bucks. the only trick is checking the lower bush and shaft for damage and clearance as well as the seal face is polished up.
also NB there is an oil filter in the power steering tank. clean it, cant get a new one. defenders do not have one of these.
NB 4 bolts have more turns lock to lock, drives you mad after driving with a 3 bolt
Recently helped a friend buy a TDi Deefer and everything on the market under $15k was rubbish. Unless you've got very lucky all I think you'd buy for $7,750 is a money pit. If my recent experience is anything to go by, then good ones are hard to find and cost quite a bit.
I think you'd be much better off spending $8k on an ADF 110 than a clapped out TDi.
Hi K&G, my farmer friend had a V8 county in showroom condition, it was a lovely car. fairly quiet and powerful, but a bit thirsty. It was a princess, lived always indoors in the barn, no modifications, and that soft green color. It's what made me want a defender. It was a solid quality car. Sometimes i regretted not buying one the same because they were cheaper the time, but the fuel costs scared me off. I often thought later that the extra premium paid for a diesel would have bought a lot of petrol.
The R380 5 speed gearbox, cross drilled input gear, and the economy of the diesel sealed the deal. Good luck :D
The one I have my eye on is at $5K with a day to go, the canopy is stuffed so you have to add $1600 on top of that, did a rough spread sheet and to get one on the road in Qld it would cost the following
Auction $6500 > $11,179 that includes a new hood and a grand for the safety cert, buyers fee, GST, Qld rego the lot.
Auction $8,000 > $12,928 might as well but something already advertised that have a current rego and all the minor problems ironed out!
wow
well for that sort of money you would get a quite good isuzu county. with a roof and 4 doors.
I know this is a old thread, but!
I ended up buying a Disco TD5 auto, great car had her for the last 18 months however, I did still have a soft spot for the ex ADF cars! So I started to look on Carsales and rang my trusted mechanic for advice, as luck would have it an old bloke had just walked in wanting to sell his County, I got in contact with him and bought it this morning :D He's owned for 26 years, 9 seater, 3.9 diesel and in good condition. So this weekend I'll be giving her a good wash and polish!
