Here is the video clip - just a quick edit of 18 minutes of flying down to 2.20 minutes. It was very windy, and a cross wind, so sorry for some of jerky manoeuvres. At 1.05 min your can see some of the risks, lucky I saw the extra large tree as we turned the corner and took the drone up higher, probably cleared it by 5 metres or more but at 40kph or so there would not be much left of the Phantom if I hit it.

The opening clip we are doing about 60kph to catch up to the Phantom, and I was about 5m off the ground, way below tree level and watching the drone through the windscreen, as soon as I lost sight of it I had to go up quickly so not to hit the trees. According to the flight record I as doing 14.5m/s which is 50kph, pretty fast for a little camera drone. I tried to fly next to the car, but there was just not enough space and I could not see where I was flying and would most likely had hit a tree so I just stuck to the in front or behind shots.

About halfway into the flight, the warning came on that I had almost reached the point of no return - the P3 estimates how much battery life it needs to get home. If I had not ignored hit the "Cancel" button, it would have turned around and went back to the start point. I reset the Home point about halfway through to stop the warning from coming up every so often. If it had lost signal, it would have returned to that "home point"

This is the flight record from the DJI Go App for the long flight. I landed an fitted the ND8 filter after the first 3 minutes of so after seeing the shutter speed was too high and it started a new flight record.

How much gear will you be carrying in your Defender - mine is very heavy in touring mode, have just too much stuff to carry.
Cheers for the tips - I've ordered that filter kit.

I don't know yet how heavy my load will be. I'm making lists while I wait for delivery - I think most of the weight will be equipment added to the 110 itself - protection, camping etc.
I don't have any plans to lug that much stuff around inside it - yet...

That's awesome! That footage just makes you want to load up and head bush immediately.

They're in beta testing for the 'follow' function on the Inspire - will the Phantom get it too or does it have it? Automatically following so you can just focus on the camera will be a great thing if it works.

From what I have seen of other "Auto Follow" modes, until they come up with "Auto Collision Avoidance", it will be a quick way of crashing into the first high tree, unless you fly up high like in the video. The Phantom 3 runs the same DJI Go App as the Inspire, and has the same camera. The main difference is yours is much bigger, faster and can handle strong winds better. I looked at getting an Inspire, but could not find the space in back of my Defender, it was just too big.

Only if it works, there has been a lot of these type of "selfie drones" that promise the world, yet no one has yet got it right yet, even the pretty expensive models have not been able to get more than just a basic "follow me" mode, and none have any form of collision avoidance working yet, but there are a lot trying, or at least collecting money from investors based on their promises.

Wow. Some great footage from people here. Very inspiring.

Are there any recommendations for a sub $1000 drone?

I've only ever flown DJI products, so this is what springs to mind:
DJI Phantom 3 Standard - RC Drone - Gadgets & Toys - More Categories | ValueBasket AU

I had a Phantom 2 and it was very easy to fly and maintain. This is several generations old now so they've sorted out a lot of the issues. Strong wind would be its main nemesis since it's not a big thing.

You can buy prop guards for it and various people online have come up with home-made ways to make it buoyant if it splashes down - foam balls, foam rings or empty water bottles attached to the bottom.

That's all in the transmitter and receiver- Frsky produce a module you can insert into most transmitters that apparently solves the problem. I lost my tricopter because it had a KK2.) flight controller that was totally manual (except for auto level).
LED lights are my saving grace for determing which direction I'm pointing
green on front, red on rear. I used blue on the sides but its easily confused with the green.
