An adventure! Seriously, just remember people generally only post about problems, and if you have one the community here is very helpful.
Good luck![]()
It's interesting you say that Mick, that's pretty much how I drive mine, but, it wasn't always the case.
I suspect though, doing the next best thing to "racing" changes could be why I had dramas with mine, although it did seem to coincide with the replacement clutch they did at 80k.
Unfortunately with the crap that was going on, I don't think I realised it for what it was,, or it would have been returned for them to remedy.
Fast gear changes was something I was quite pleased with initially, as fighting Melbournes traffic, it was a winner so to speak.
Well, I know I'm slowing down, but this was more forced.
I have found the Puma gearbox to be excellent in that respect, but after they swapped out the clutch, it all went pear shaped, although it took a little time to take effect.
This may be one of the reasons autos have become so reliable - you don't have drivers abusing the gear change, as in manuals.
I'd hardly call slick changes abuse, and the Puma's gearbox is good enough to do it easily,,, just most people aren't coordinated or competent enough to get it right.
People are just pure lazy, that's why we have auto's. And strangely enough, VERY few people know how to utilise an auto trans.
The automatic transmission is just getting better and better with time and expertise. Allot of dollars goes into R&D.
The rev holding thing, actually there is a techno name for it, its not a Land Rover Defender thing, from memory the early model Holden Rodeo diesels had this feature.
The 2.4lt Defender TDCi didnt have it, then the 2.2lt did have it, but the last model 2.2lt it seems to have been dropped.

P.S to smooth out your Defender gear shifting, remove your foot off the throttle pedal FIRST, then depress the clutch, I have mentioned this in another thread.

Interesting, my main issue was on the beach where a fast gear change was needed, also very noticable towing my camper on the road(just returned from a trip to fraser island) it was very annoying. The thing is driving to work this morning the issue seems to have settled down?
So - not sure if this is the same thing - MY2015 2.2 drops the revs after the gear change as such - but not back to idle - it holds the revs at the right point for the gear change
As an example - lets say I am accelerating (ha ha) in 2nd and rev out to over 3K rpm (maybe up to 3.5k rpm) - as I change up to 3rd the revs drop to around 2K - 2.2K rpm and hold there for a second or two while I get 3rd engaged. When I let out the clutch the revs are at the right point.
I find the end result smooth - relatively speaking.
If I fluff around at low RPM I find it hard to deal with and the whole drive experience "clunky" - if I get it moving I find it a much better car to drive!
Have to say the more I use it the better it gets. And after towing a dog trailer with 4 decent sized dogs to Melb and back it has improved even more.
I think these PUMA's need to be driven harder to be enjoyed. Maybe I'll regret it later on - but pleasant experience so far.
Cheers,
Col.
