I like the question , I've had quite a few Land Rovers over the years . I had a series 2 that had a thin bonnet lots of rivets in them . Next series 2a , that had what was then called the Deluxe Bonnet , they were thicker , I don't think they had rivets . They were used on the series 3 as well . I also had a stage 1 v8 they were the first to have the long Bonnet . I always thought that was the best feature on any Land Rover , as we know they used It until the Puma replacement . At first I didn't like It , I thought It looks like a carbuncle , I have got used to mine now , but I still think the last bonnet was better . In spite of that I don't let It bother me , It is growing on me !!.. Jim :)
I like the way hump helps me easily identify the 2007+ models while I'm waving at them.
I hate the way I can't put a spare wheel on the bonnet though - this is an iconic Land Rover look.
As for the chequerplate - well I use mine all the time - the design I have is a single piece of 3mm which means I can stand on it without making odd noises or pulling odd faces....and now that I have a dual wheel carrier at the back this is how I tend to dismount from the roof rack.
It's not particularly graceful but that's more about the person than the technique.
I like the hump,.....I wish it signified an LS3 or the like!!,...I wouldn't like chequer plate on any bonnet, but I reckon it's a practical addition for the wingtops.

Looks a bit dromedary to me, I would personally prefer it were two humped.
To me it's a great styling change, pragmatic, yet graceful. It also works in with the quarter rounded front wings and, dare I say, curved hip line of the Defender.
My drag coefficient Q was half serious ...apparently with a tyre on the bonnet it's more aerodynamic (there was a post about this a while back, sorry can't find it now), must be the way it pushes the air up and over the windscreen. But the bulge doesn't seem to do anything for my fuel consumption LOL, which is actually worse than my TDI !
It's probably just me, but... well, I have never liked any chequer plate on the Defender. A few years back I was looking at a used Defender that had the chequer plate fitted on the sills and wings and I wondered "how can I remove this, fill the holes left behind, repaint?..." The answer turned out to be incredibly simple. I didn't buy it.
But even considering the above, the bonnet chequer plate to me just looks plain hideous on a Puma.

You can, but it's not legal and it sits way too high for my liking. Having said that, I drove this 90 to deliver it and it wasn't half a bad as I thought it would be with the wheel there.Quote:
