Heavy Duty Suspension 110

When I bought the Defender it already had an ARB bar and Ironman winch to which I've fitted synthetic rope, so I can't comment on whether it had dropped much, but it doesn't seem to be an issue. The rear doesn't drop when I hitch up the camper trailer.


Another issue with springs is whether they are linear or progressive in their compression. Progressive are designed to flex a bit softly at first before hardening up under load. That seems like a good thing to me.


Our previous D1 had a TJM linear 50mm lift fitted and I always felt it was a bit too hard in the initial bump and progressive would have been better for normal driving.

I'm on a fact finding mission regards to what was different for 110 heavy duty suspension.
This thread has been helpful, I have some questions for those in the know.

Was it just springs and rims or was there more to it?
I'm curious to know if the axle housing is different in particular.
Is there a difference in the spring saddle and shocker mounts?



If the wise brains trust of AULRO can't help I could try to see if the parts numbers are different for the housing.
I would need someone with the heavy duty package to pass on a VIN to me(PM if you prefer).
I could then ask my parts man to compare the numbers in the system.

As I understand it, the 110 has 175 lb/in springs on the front and 300 lb/in on the rear.
The 130 has front springs of 225 lb/in. Fitting the 130's 225 lb/in springs to the front of the 110 is said to give sufficient extra to eliminate the sag caused by the weight of a bulbar and winch.
As for the rear, mine doesn't seem to have dropped noticeably despite a 110 litre fuel tank and drawers and doesn't drop noticeably when our camper trailer is attached. If concerned about the rear, fitting airbags seems to be the value solution.
That's the route I'll be going next year - 130 front springs in the front and airbags in the rear.

Medium load are fine for winch and bulbar. The TF ones we sell are recommended for up to a additional 100kg.

There's no reinforcing anywhere unless it's internal, and I just can't see that happening. I've heard the HD pack came with the sleeved Sals like the 130s had, but I can't confirm as I've never had the stubs off.

I'd be interested in what you find out about the axle as the one from that vehicle is the one I still use in the Perentie hybrid. Incidentally, the Perentie chassis is reinforced at the spring saddle.

Thanks. Yes, I figured if the 130 front springs take it from 175 to 225 lb/in then the extra 50 should be enough for a bulbar and winch. On another thread someone said he put 300s in the front and it made the ride unbearably harsh. I don't want to do that, I just want to return it to level instead of being slightly nose-down.

My own experience with suspension is as follows, Land Rover had front springs and Dobinson 300kg constant load progressive rears, the combo is supposed to lift it a touch approx 40-50mm but I've got an ARB bar at the front with 10000lb warn and carry a drawer system water tank and rear quarter fuel tank in the rear as well as roof rack and tools. With the family of 5 all our gear and a camper trailer in tow it sits a little nose up. Daily use its a little bum up or neutral. The ride is quite good unladen as well which really suppressed me.

I can be of no help regarding the chassis or diffs but would recommend 130 or wolf tubeless wheels, very strong and look right!
