Yep,been done to death.The axle flanges are,I wouldn't say sloppy fit,lets call them less than tight fit on the axle splines which causes backlash.As the flanges wear they become even less tight which in turn causes even more backlash,one of the most complained about nuances of the defender,your flanges will wear,change them now while it's cheap. Pat

Which brand @ $30 ? And do you need ot buy other consumables like gaskets seperately ?

The make makes no difference,I've used Terrafirma,Britpart,one type that arrived in clear plastic bags with no name,all have done enough miles on defenders to convince me there's nothing in it,just buy what ever you can get and a teaspoon of grease under the cap twice a year and your set.They aren't $30 anymore either because of the dollar,their $40-45 each and neither of my defenders have gaskets or goo and neither leaks,if you have steelies you don't even need to take the wheels off. Pat

Totally support what PAT303 has written. The pre-purchase reading/research I did had me convinced that replacing the drive flanges early was a good idea and so planned for it.

It's written up in another thread I initiated - when I collected the car from my local indie LR mechanic after fitting the difference was like night and day. (reduction in driveline slop)

I only have experience with the Ashcroft HD flanges. Whilst I am sure other makers can do as well - I wonder if there are others with options just as sloppy as original? Buyer beware. ;)

Hasten to add - maybe the original drive flanges are not really a loose fit. Just not adequately lubricated. Lots of reading pointed to dry fit eventually leading to excess wear due to "fretting". So possibly just making sure there is grease present would work even with stock flanges.

HD flanges just make the task of keeping grease in place easier.

The originals flog out regardless,I tried greasing them at 10k along with the uni's on two defenders as they struggled towards 100k but didn't make it.It's an easy cheap fix. Pat

1: Where can I buy these in OZ?

2: How much?

3: Can my local Landy dealer fit them and still keep the 'warranty' intact?
