    Video comparison: Defender 110 vs Jeep Rubicon (1/2 hr vid)

    Interesting video by Andrew St. Pierre White.

    In summary, if you haven't got half an hour to watch the whole thing:
    - Jeep is best at technical/extreme 4WDing
    - Land Rover Defender is best for touring/expeditions.

    I'm glad my 110 steers and drives better than his

    BFG ATs have their limitations in that terrain (at least I think they were ATs, not RTs)

    What's your downhill technique with TDCi Defenders? The two fellas in the video were saying one cannot just let the defender idle in low first as the speed is too high - must put clutch in and use brakes on the steepest bits.

    I tend to disagree and do what they said "inexperienced" instructors espouse - feet off and idle down in low first.

    Other TDCi owners?

    I'm with you on that one Neil, not sure where they came up with that being a good idea...

    Lucky the didn't test a Tdi or TD5 Deefer then, low/low is too high IMO and you do have to ride the brakes, unless you have an Underdrive or Maxi Low Range gears. (and even with the Maxi gears I have low/low is only equivalent to the TDci's gearing)

    Giggling at all his points about the Defender, and how much all of it makes no sense but you love anyway.

    I have a TD5, depending on the incline I will make a call, but unless you are only in your seat by virtue of the seatbelt then compression braking in first low in a TD5 is fine. On that hill, I definitely would have done first low with minimal braking to drop the fronts of the ledge, then a dap for the rears.

    Haven't experienced TDi or TD5. But the low 1st in TDCi, I reckon, is low enough for the steepest downhills. If really needed at steps etc can still dab brakes to reduce speed a bit more.

    In fact the TDCi's have the "idle jack" feature (raises idle RPM in low 1st) which exists purely because LR deem wheel speed TOO slow for a safe downhill without it.

    Agree with you tact, I never had issue with 1st low on steep downhills especially after my recent camping trip to high country in Vic.
