Areas like Menai are close to home and you can get as adventurous as your tolerance permits. Lithgow and surrounds are a good day out. Like Menai, plenty for all risk tolerances. I recommend tagging along with an AULRO gathering or the LRO Syndey mob as suggested. Meet lots of weirdy beardies.
If you hang around Mulgo's workshop you will meet all sorts of like minded souls and get some great touring ideas.
