Sounds like you put the full 24V thru the 12V system,very lucky to have only fried a fuse and circuit breaker.Cant see why you shouldnt be jump starting anything from it in the first place,its a 12V battery,a jump start is no different from any other 12V load on the system.
With the CAT grader you cant get to the batteries without spanners,there is a 24V jumper point so havent tried the 12V start.We have started trucks/loaders etc 12V to 24V but you need to know what you are doing.

haha yes good point, as in the OP would be jumping up stating it was 12V, instead as you have pointed out, we hear silence.

*So ooops its 24V hence blowing fuse.
*Even if 12V the amp load of jumping starting a truck blew the fuse anyway.

On side note, I find fitting a "jump plug" onto the front of a Defender a good addition...

*No more trying to get jumper leads under passenger seat.
*high amp cable connected direct to primary battery.
*high amp anderson plug on front of vehicle.
*fit off a good quality set of surge protected jump leads with an anderson plug
*high amp battery isolator switch inside vehicle, so anderson plug is only live when needed.

Every customers Defender i've fitted this to admits its awesome once they have used it! And of course a jump plug is only needed on a Defender to start other vehicles right?.....:p :p

My son has an Anderson plug off his starter battery under the bonnet and it is very useful. For example, when camping recently we were able to plug the folding solar panels straight in to it and the power flowed from the starting battery through the battery controller to the second battery, which was running his fridge. I have an Anderson plug off my second battery for connecting the solar panels for direct charging.

Just on that, when my starting battery died, I realized I might be able to jump start the vehicle off the second battery which is mounted in the back of the drawers in the rear, accessed by lifting up the seat. So I hooked up the high amp jumper leads between the batteries and away she went. Not recommended off a deep cycle AGM I know, but it worked. An advantage of having two batteries.
