you can, but it substantially increases the "fun" factor. Its one of those things I'd do just to prove it can be done, not how I'd recommend doing it.

depending on why you want to remove the shroud its easier to remove the fan, the only reason I wouldnt pull the fan to do it is if I was pulling the shroud to replace the radiator only. Then I'd unseat it to allow the radiator to be pulled, the only justification for doing it that way is that you dont care if you damage the radiator on the way out.

I remember Gav (Bacicat/Homestar atm) helping me replace one of these, without removing the shroud. ***** of a job, but got there in the end. If the bolts aren't snapped, surely it shouldn't be too hard to put 2 new bolts in (perhaps with some Loctite this time)?

Does the PS pulley actually turn
Is it possible that the PS pump has seized, thus loading up and shearing the retaining bolts?
Well what most likely happened is they tore out of the alloy housing?
If the pump has seized you will want to check the PS circuit for metallic badness

I would be pulling the shroud and fan off in order to reduce the swear jar donations...

He's a top fella, helped me out a few times now ;)

I got my "LR fix" for the day and finally got to meet the infamous VladTepes.
What more could a bloke want.

So 2 bolts went awol and the 3rd snapped.

Any ideas as to why? shaft runout? pulley/belt not running true? hydraulic blockage in steering box?

Seems a little weird to just happen out of the blue. 300tdi PS pumps can be pernickity at times...

howd the third break? flush or with enough showing to make getting the rest of it out easy?

did you manage an in situ fix or did you have to pull it down a bit?


Additional FYI.

I just remembered, there should be 4 bolts holding the metal plate that the pump mounts on onto the ally support housing, you should be able to rat 2 of them as an emergency fix.
