Prop Shaft failure - Bailey Morris

    Greetings, one and all,

In a recent service, the mechanic noticed the Double Cardan front prop shaft that was installed when I lifted Monty a couple of years ago, has started to show signs of rust in areas where one should not be expecting to see rust.

It's only been two years since this was installed and I haven't driven the vehicle in salt water or on beaches at all. Each time I get Monty muddy, I clean him thoroughly with the pressure sprayer underneath so I'm curious as to why this is happening.

Several attempts to get in touch with the manufacturer (Bailey Morris) have failed; they simply will not respond to my enquiries.

Questions for those with experience and/ or wisdom in such matters:

    1. I recently had the flywheel machined and the clutch plate and slave cylinder replaced so the shaft would have been removed to do this and put back.....now I'm getting a vibration when driving, particularly at high speeds and when accelerating. Could the shaft be responsible or is it likely something else causing it?
    2. Assuming I need a replacement shaft, what are the recommended suppliers? I've heard good things about Tom Woods but am open to suggestions. Buggered if I'm getting anything else from Bailey Morris.
    3. Are these shafts simple to install oneself in the driveway?
    4. Do they need regular maintenance e.g. greasing?

As ever, I am very grateful for any help you can give me.

    Cheers
    Bobby

I had a front shaft go on a Disco 2 , They are also D/C type , what I found out about mine was , they are a none serviceable item , they have no grease nipple's . They usually fail at about 150ks . So if you are replacing it with an aftermarket prop . make sure you can grease it . I thought it was bad deign to factory fit a prop , on a Land Rover that you can't grease . There used to be a repair kit for the D/C joint . Don't know if there still about ? You need a good vice for that job . To do a strait change over ? Yes you can do it on your drive , just make sure you have good quality 9/16 ring spanners , as they can be tight . I use new Nylock nuts as well !!.. Jim

Yo can by a special thin spanner/socket that enables use of a rattle gun, which makes it much easier.

I believe Chook73 and Drover have experienced failures of Bailey Morris shafts, I think Lou (Dullbird) may have been part of that convo, something about BM denying they were suited for highway use?

As already mentioned, getting one that has grease-able joints is the norm, I think even the basic Brit Part one from memory has grease nipples.

I'm sure from memory customers and plenty here have got replacement heavy duty shafts from British Parts of Utah for Disco 2's
Discovery Front Driveshaft Drive Shaft TVB000110

They have a listing for the Defender, but not sure if they are a heavy duty version.

APT Fabrications offer a heavy duty gease-able shaft for all models, while I havent tried them, if its like the rest of APT Fabs gear it will be nicely made and will do the job.

IHMO - I've yet to see any front shafts that have been rebuilt by any local "driveline type" business that has lasted the distance, basically a waste of money.

I'd go APT as they have a good reputation and are an Australian business.

The last new one I got someone was $600. Sold as TVB000110-OE ... the only one I could get from LR Parts suppliers before going to driveshaft suppliers.

any reputeable driveshaft repair business will overhaul your shaft much cheaper than buying one , including greaseable universals.

you will hear plenty of recommendations here for brands etc.

take you 10-15 mins to remove it and whatever time the business needs it for if you dont do it your self.

get new nuts and bolts when you reinstall it.

I wish that were the case for me as I would rather support local business.
However when I needed the rear on the 110 the cheapest repair I could find around SEQ was 450 and no guarantee it want going to be more. Got a Spicer one delivered for $270.

    Great memory Disco .

Yep Bailey Morris shaft are to be very careful of ........and yes they (BM) advised after a high speed failure they are not designed for highway use.

Chook and I eventually had a custom shafts made up and paid for the privilege.
