POD would removal of manifold and draining coolant make the job easier?
now that mine is disabled I am interested in cleaning out the inlet tract as much as possible and was thinking of pulling the inlet manifold in any case?

Another piece of wisdom gleaned from email exchanges with Pete Bell (some months ago) was that the ECU apparently calls for the EGR to open if it thinks a bit of an emergency situation arose and there is a need to reduce engine output for a while. The BAS tune apparently doesn't inhibit this "emergency" action.
(Maybe the above needs a bit of validating/checking in case I misunderstood)
So (my thinking) maybe there is some benefit in leaving EGR in working order, but normally closed via the tune. Then if there is some danger of engine damage and the ECU wants to reduce engine power by opening EGR - it can
Sorry took me a couple of days to get back. Bear in mind it is about 2 years since I did this and it was a rush job the day before we left for a 10 week outback expedition. From what I remember, draining the coolant is not an issue (except that you could remove the heater tap etc that are in the way) but removing the inlet manifold I think would make a big difference- I'd only do this if you were planning on removing the manifold anyway though. Might be just as difficult to get to the bottom manifold bolts. The bolts that hold the EGR valve on are extremely awkward to access, I remember lying on top of the engine and feeding my left arm down through the obstacle course, wishing I had a universal joint in my 1/4" drive socket set and a couple more elbows in each arm. One of the most awkward things I've had to access in 35 years tinkering. Funny thing was, when i got it off and opened it up it was spotless inside.
I remember JC on here saying the EGR on the 2.4 Puma to be a bitch of a thing to get to and work on.
Pat,once you get the BAS tune and EGR closed permanently,if you go that way,you won't believe the improvement in the vehicle.:)
