TDCi EGR are they water cooled or not?

So my egr decided to stay stuck open so tonight I had a quick look and mine is not water cooled,I've assumed they all were but mine has no cooling pipes to it.Why Ford stuck it were it is makes it a fun job to remove,I can't even get the electrical connector off.Has anyone got an idea which wires are power and earth?,I was going to hook it directly to a battery and try and giggle it closed until a proper fix is done. What engine is yours?
On the 2.4 the EGR cooler sits at the back of the block with coolant hoses easily visible?

The workshop manual has pretty clear images
The manual does not call out to remove other components
    Simply disconnect batt
    Fisconnect plug
    Remove four bolts
    Discard gaskets?

Mines a 2.4,cannot see any cooling pipes on the valve itself.Ford have both water cooled and air cooled listed,I'm glad the manual makes it sound easy, looks like a bitch to me. Pat

Cooling is prior to the EGR.
Follow the exhaust manifold offtake, it wraps around the back of the block to the EGR valve.
The linking pipe at the back of the block IS the EGR cooler.
It has two coolant lines running to it, gas flows through the middle.

To remove the EGR valve you do not need to disturb the coolant system.

I have just recently "BAS-ified" my EGR making it no longer functioning and am musing the idea of converting the EGR cooler into a shower water heater

I will be interested to see how you go removing & replacing it.
By my dead reckoning most of the intake side needs to be pulled but the manual makes it sound like pizzle?

My next chance Ill be installing silicone IC hoses, cleaning out the entire inlet system of coke reside and blanking the outlet of the EGR cooler to the EGR valve.
Pete from BAS suggests keeping the EGR valve insitu with wiring attached even when it is turned off in the ECU software to prevent random glitches.

If I choose to turn the EGR cooler into a shower heater Ill wait till 70,000km and change the coolant etc etc at the same time

It doesn't look that bad, still a PITA,the bottom bolt is accessible from underneath,it's just a typical modern vehicle regarding access. Pat

Pat one thing I found interesting before uploading the Ecu patch permanently closing the egr was monitoring the egr commanded opening value in the BAS app.
I had foolishly assumed the valve was digital ie open or closed? But it seems variable with the percentage open rising to about 50% even at low throttle inputs?
That valve works hard in round town driving ranging from 0% open to 60% or so open almost constantly changing...

Since shutting out the valve I have found the low speed low to moderate throttle response a million times better... Think rolling to a corner give way taking away in 2nd...

    Anyways

I removed mine for cleaning some time ago, it is do-able without removing the manifold and without disturbing the cooling system but it is not a job I want to ever do again.
