It's simple torque multiplication.

A few of us on here are ex-racers, most race diffs are spiral/bevel, not hypoid as they consume less power, run cooler and often it's a simple case of centrelines lining up in transaxles.
A Rover centre is no where near as strong as a Hypoid CWP, even the relatively small 8" Toyota high pinion is a huge improvement over a Rover (as long as you don't give it a bootfull in low range/reverse :D)

What runs trouble free in high speed/low torque (relative) applications can be destroyed in two minutes of low speed/high torque/high shock load situations.

I get the ex racer thing, been there done that.
When you refer to bigger tyres i would imagine 35 inch plus. I cant see standard 32s or even 33s for that matter being to much of an issue. As for shock load a mass travelling at speed then landing at speed would produce a huge amount of stress on drive components. I understand that low range produces greater torque relative to speed but speed in itself is also a massive stresser especially when the driver still has their foot planted on the throttle.
Anyway what im getting at is that the average bloke touring and doing the occasional tough track on standard tyres doesnt need to take out another mortgage upgrading things that they are unlikely to break in the first place.

I've been doing this for 20years. So far the puma model has been the worst for component and build QC of any landrover I personally have worked on. Sad but that is my opinion based on what i see . ( still love em though. Every time I drive one all is forgiven...������ )

Is that both the 2.4 and 2.2? The 2.4 has had a lot more issues than the 2.2 from what ive read

I feel exactly like JC, I've owned Land Rovers for near on 30 years,and the build quality, cost cutting on the Puma, is by far the worst , whether it be the 2.4 or the 2.2. It's the same poor quality since 2007.

But, I wouldn't drive anything else off road.

You probably know I'm having issues with my 2010 Defender at the moment, and when it happened I was reluctant to post, just In case people started to jump to conclusions, and speculating on the reason for the failure.

1nando on one hand you say it's best you don't believe all of what you read on this forum, and yet your quite happy to quote from what "I've read", and make comments about an aftermarket supplier, and their product failure.
That supplier has not heard of his product failing yet, neither have the very knowledgeable people on DEFENDER2.NET.

Agreed, can't believe everything that is posted on forums. Your right, the Ashcroft failure id read was probably bs. I should have been more opened minded when i read it and doubted the info.

Back to the original topic of this thread if I may...:D
I ordered the two splined components from Land Rover and asked the dealer parts bloke if he would please look into the recommended grease for me; I was thinking the workshop might have a tub of the LR specified grease and let me have a bit...turns out the LR parts manual now shows a sachet of the LR specified grease as a part associated with the splined coupling parts. They ordered the sachet of grease along with the coupling parts, a 25gram sachet of grease complete with LR part number LR078521. Cost a shade under $5.
