Probably an earthing issue, most likely at or near the tank, but possibly in the dashboard, although I would expect that to give a high reading.
During my last 3 week trip up into the vic alps I had a view issues( flat starting battery recharged with solar panel in. A week)
However being on the far end of a quite waterlogged track with a muddy slurry my fuel gauge dropped from full to empty with light on..... not smelling or seeing any leak I made Arun for home
Now the gauge very slowly crept up over 3/4 of an hour but scince then it's showing a 1/4 lower than when it's parked up for the night ( for that matter even an hour) . It creeps up slowly over half an hour driving..... any thoughts apart from the plug into the fuel pump being either wet or soaked in mud slurry?
Any other options pop into anyone's brain bank

Anyone got any idea where the earth for the instrument binnacle is? Or are they just earthed back through the looms

Checked the sender by plugging in an old pump, sometimes it works sometimes it dosent, cleaned all the chassis earths I could find plus the 2 on the engine bay firewall and under the drivers seat.
No joy at all ...once or twice the gauge hasn't moved at all. , more often it sits at 1/2 a tank or just above orange with the warning light on , I've used contact cleaner and crc on all the instrument connectors and no improvement
As I'm out of crc and unshure of how much fuel I have left the search is of till Thursday morning.
Two interesting things , it will come up slowly to about 1/2 a tank after 10 kms or so( there could be 1/2 atank in there) and secondly it went haywire originally after a foot deep rough section of water after having a flat battery( I've tried charging the battery and using a known good one)
Any other ideas

I had a similar experience in my 130. I removed the sender and found the float bowl was two thirds full of fuel! Of course you cannot buy just tge float bowl as a spare part. I squeezed the float bowl to find the hole and drained the fuel then heated up a screw driver and massaged the plastic to cover the hole
All fixed

I've got a good sender , I'll swap it out n see. I suspect it's the wire from the sender to the guage , but I've got the access panel off so changing the sender is a 10 min job

I did notice that when I filled the tank to the brim that the needle didn't quite hit the stop on full on the guage, so it could be the float full of fuel
