Strangley, I warned brother of this 'impossible' task before we serviced his D2 TD5 too.
So he wouldn't make a mess at his place, he came over to my place(yep! to make the mess at my place :p)
Anyhow .. filter almost came off by hand, but we used his belt type filter tool for the first mm or twist.
Then had to allow it to drop onto the hose immediately below the filter, trying to work out if we could maneuver it out without tipping it. I was underneath ready to place the empty bucket if it did tip, but he managed to get it out without it spilling!
ps. D1 300 Tdi oil filter isn't much better either.
While there's room to get to the filter, I've yet to manage getting it off without spilling any oil onto the diff pumpkin, where it ends up filling in the webbing of the diff.
Use rags to collect it all, so no oil gets onto the gravel below. If I wasn't so slack and actually raised the D1 before doing the oil change(filter change), and allowed myself more clearance between filter and diff .. it wouldn't be a problem. But I remain a 'slacker'! [bigwhistle]
In retrospect, I should have used a plastic bag, but didn't realise how difficult it would be to get the filter out without spilling oil all over the place. Will use one in the future.
Will look into different types of filter wrench for future removals if needed. I just had to purchase something at the auto parts store on a Saturday morning to get it off. Hopefully in the future, I will not need the wrench.

the TD5 oil filter is a bit of a mongrel, 200TDI is an utter barstool, and 300TDI (defender) is bliss..... I use a sawn off 1 litre milk container to contain the oil.....
on the TD5 I only use genuine filters, and have finally got around to getting the tool!!

I don't know what you td5 owners complain about, look at what we Rangie Rover owners have to put up with on the td6.BMW engine.[bigwhistle]

Older "lost" knowledge from one who has been there and done most of it, for those now inheriting older D2s and TD5s and re-learning old "known" lessons :0)
As I recall, it all became "reasonably" easy if one removed the turbo heat shield first. I also had a second battery taking up space.
First removal of the heat shield at this age may be difficult. Once done and repairs/mods carried out and reassembled with copper grease is easy after :0) Recall modified the mounting of the heat shield to make it easier to remove and install.
Another word to the wise if one hasn't already found out. The particle separator lid retaining screws -- LR specify a torque - for good reason - easy to over tighten and strip.

Ummmmm..Duh! TD5/D2 slips! Ol'timers moment!
Nevertheless the TD5 to the turbo outlet and back a bit is the same. Removal of the heat shield could still perhaps make the job easier. As for the particle separator, same same [smilebigeye]
