Question Loud squealing when applying Brakes on my Defender

    Guys,
My front brakes on my defender have become VERY noisy when I apply my brakes. It's a loud squealling sound. If I apply my brakes hard then there is no squealling. The discs are in good order (no lip) and there is plenty of meat on the pads. I'm not sure of the brand of pads as they were already in there when I bought the car.

Any ideas as to how I might be able to get rid of the squealling when I apply my brakes?

Have you been in a dusty environment lately? Mine squealed like heck on a recent dusty trip through central Aus but are fine now

Mine only ever squeal when I drive on dusty roads.

Do yours squeal on sealed roads?

I haven't driven on Dirt Roads for ages, so, it's been mainly all bitumen driving....
I'll try the hose out idea but don't think it will achieve the right outcome....

Mine has been like that since buying it over a year ago.

I've read wrong pads can cause it when they have no chamfered edge.

Rob mate, clean the whole show out and then run a bead of high temp rtv silicone along the back of the pad where the caliper pistons contact the pad. Sometimes - not all the time - squealing is caused by the pads vibrating in the caliper under light loads and goes away under harder application. I'd say this is your issue, both my 110 and my wife's Hyundai i30 did it, the silicone on the back of the pads fixed it up.

I just noticed you said it is your front brakes squealing. If that is the case then my earlier comment is probably irrelevant.

I'm fairly sure it is only my back brakes that squeal on dusty roads. I don't think the front brakes are exposed to dust in the way the back ones are.

You can buy a spray can of anti squeal which dries to a plastic material when sprayed on the BACK of the pad.

Squealing is often due to the pads being so hard that they cut through the rubber stuff on the back and it is metal to metal with the caliper piston.

Are you using OEM brakes with the anti-vibration plate thingy......I've only used OEM and never had issues
