    PTO shaft layout for td5

Posted for a friend in the process of joining this forum.......he has a pto winch he wants to fit to his td5 Defender and is seeking a way for the 3 shafts, 4 uni joints and 2 bearings to get from the pto unit to the winch, over a crossmember, under/beside the sump, and over the front axle. Any diagrams or other info would be appreciated.
    Thanks

It just runs up the inside of the chassis rail......

I should pull my finger out and re-install mine.

    Hi

I just sold late last month a PTO and winch and bullbar off my old County to a block with a TD5 wonder if its him?

I'm guessing its a tomas PTO

It should fit up OK you'll need to fabricate supports on the gearbox cross member to mount on bear and another on the front cross member. I can next week send a pic of the front support as its still welded on the chassis. The g'box one is just a bit of ~90x90 angle welded on.

Mine was on a V8 and you may need to re-route the exhaust on a TD5 as it runs lower than on the V8 and may foul the driveshaft.

Can't see any other reason why it shouldn't all fit up, unless he has an extended LT230 sump or something else mounted down the driver side chassis rail.

Worth it though as they are a great winch.

Hi Clive.....I’m interesting in how the PTO was mounted I.e. 6 o’clock or 9 o’clock??

On my tdi it was mounted at 6 o’clock

But have seen one at an auction mounted st 9 o’clock which now has me confused which is the correct orientation

I have a 9 o'clock Maxidrive to suit LT230. Like yours, sitting around until I find the motivation to install it. The bolt spacing is such that only one orientation will work, i.e. some were made to point down, some to the side.

Are.....didn’t realize the both spacing was in such a way it could only go one way.

Be interesting to look a maxidrive unit to see if the output seal is better designed.

yeah, clive i did buy it off you. (and i have re modeled the bar so the winch sits 70mm closer) (i also re modeled my right thumb and left forearm with the 125 grinder and spent 3 nights in hossy)
    it is an LT 230
i have anthony of british 4wd imports working out if the PTO unit from the county transfere case needs any mods or adaption to suit the TD5 T case. the top gear varies in position by about 5mm
it is made to mount at 6 o'clock, or redrill one hole it could mount at 8 o'clock.
either way i will have to remove the down pipe of the exhaust, fit the shafts then visit Mr Muffler and get the exhaust rerouted.
