...it does look like a neat setup. May not scale well to full size vehicles tho...(?)

and how did you go getting them engineered?
Pictures please!
So...I may have send Mr Wolfgang Tibus an email last night...and the reply was:
"the price for the Portals for the Defender 130 is 12800 Euro excl. tax + shipping
The 16x8" double bead lock wheel is 680 Euro each excl. tax and the fender flares are 600 as a set of 4.
I do not know how much the freight will be but I guess around 500 Euro."
Ouch! Current conversion puts the portals at AU$20k (for the set of 4), the wheels at AU$1050 each and the flares at AU$925
Not sure of the tax rate on each of these, then there is freight at around AU$800
Then there are tyres (315/75 R16), fabrication and engineering. [bawl][bawl][bawl]
It'll be tax free at the export end, but you'll get hit by the Aus government when they arrive.
I don't think there's duty on car parts any more but there is the 10% GST (and thats paid including the freight cost!) .
So lets say you get the portals, 4 flashy wheels and the flares - the taxman will hit you with a bill for around $2,500. So that's some extra ouch ! Brings it up to around AUD $27,500.
You can get a whole kickarse Defender for that !
Also add hydroboost or larger brake master cylinder ,as the standard cylinder doesn't have the braking capability for the larger brakes.
also allow for braces to the portals,l didn't like Wolfgangs bracing .
if you go the 5" portals you will need to change your transfer case gearing to 1.003 to bring back to normal for on road use .
my portals were the prototypes not the ones Wolfgang is producing now.
very happy with them .
If I had the spare funds to spend $25,000 + on some accessories / mods for my car, I don't think I would be too worried about factoring in the 10% GST.............BUT, I definitely haven't got that sort of $$$ to throw at my car anyway [bawl], so it's not something I'll be dealing with any time soon [biggrin]
Cheers, Murray
A friend of mine picked a very neat and tidy low k 6x6 Pinzgauser for 22k
Not worth the trouble.
