Very interested in the engineering side of these portals, i have a set of c303 portals at home i really need to put under a rover, gearing wise they are quite low at 5.99:1 though, i believe they give a 5in lift and are currently setup to bolt straight under a rover including a 3 link front, i just need to sort out brakes.

Isn't the 303 portal ratio 1:8 or something, giving a final drive ratio of around 3.38:1?

i believe the ratio is 2:1 at the portal with a 2.99 at the CWP making it 5.99

These portals are the ones we heard so much about the failures of from a previous member.
Now there is the 3rd generation portals of which I have heard nothing about there performance.
What lift is 3rd gen, what improvements have been made?

Volvos are only 50mm wider track OVERALL to a series rover I think? or is it coil sprung?? But either way, for that much lift and only a little increase in track width I would not want to run them personally. The portal end is a pretty good design and the knuckle has huge seperation at the kingpin points. Drum brakes are a bit of a drag but disc conversions can be had.

5.1 ratio CW&P are available for the Volvo axles and so are disc brake conversions. I bought the German TUV approved version for my 6x6
