    Defender 300Tdi rear door lock

    Hi all

The rear door had stopped locking sometime ago. Closes and latches alright just won’t lock. So i took it off cleaned it and flooded it with WD40. Cleaned out the little hole on the side of the barrel but was unable to actually remove the barrel which the Haynes manual suggest you can (with the key inserted).

Anyway finally got it working on the bench so put it back in the door and I have exactly the same situation as before. Closed/latches but will not lock.

I thought maybe I am not closing it firmly enough and perhaps the latch isn’t rotating far enough for it to lock, but no matter how hard I tried to close the door nothing changed.

    Any ideas?
    Cheers

Can't help with the problem but to remove you normally insert key, turn the lock then poke a piece of wire through the hole to push in the locking pin that holds the barrel in place.
The idea is that you need a key to turn it to the position where the barrel can be released, mind you I've drilled extra holes in the past to release barrels where I didn't have a key.......

WD40 or any lubricant isn't a good idea in locks, you should use graphite powder. Graphite lubricates but doesn't attract dirt. You can get it in Bunnings or sand down a greylead (pencil) to make your own.

    Thanks again Colin

I have ordered the kit, let’s see if the fixes it. I’ll wash out the WD40 and lub with graphite (which I already).

I will have another go at getting the barrel out (may be the wd40 has freed that).

My back door lock spring repair kit has arrived. But when I pulled the unit apart the spring (the one the kit replaces) was still in place. As was the other bigger spring. So I cleaned it up and removed lots of red dirt... replaced the spring, I even managed to remove the lock barrel more by good luck than good planning.

I installed the new spring and reassembled. Everything appeared to be working as it should but it still is not locking. In fact it is exactly as it was before.

    What else could it be?

2006 Defender TD5 rear door lock

LH door was not locking reliably. RH door mostly ok.

I took the card off with the $19 kit from the 'bay and the lock was visible. And dirty-greasy, maybe I should not have tried WD40. There are two plastic and one metal securing snib on the three rods to the lock. Took them off, and the lock shoe horned out ok.

I love carby and throttle cleaner. Gave it a good dose from all sides with the small straw attached and then blew it out with air. Repeat, repeat again. VERY clean, the thing looked lovely. I used a little 3in1 oil on the metal pins. WOrked like a charm. Insalled. Has that new car feeling now. I did replace all the plastic snibs to re-fit the door card. 30 minutes all up. Happy.

Then I did the RH door for good measure. Only 20 minutes this time. Both doors have that really smooth feel and lock shut without force.
